The launch is the latest in a string of recent weapons tests amid military tensions with China in the Ladakh sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gkseries.com\/blog\/current-affairs-quiz-2019-daily-gk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Daily Current Affairs Quiz 2020<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Key-Points<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Shaurya is a land-based parallel of the submarine launched K-15 missile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These ballistic weapons belong to the K missile family \u2014 codenamed after late Dr APJ Abdul Kalam \u2014 which are launched from Arihant class of nuclear submarines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The K family of missiles are primarily Submarine Launched Ballistic Missiles (SLBMs), which have been indigenously developed by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The development of these naval platform launched missiles began in the late 1990s as a step towards completing India\u2019s nuclear triad \u2014 the capability of launching nuclear weapons from land, sea and air based assets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because these missiles are to be launched from submarines, they are lighter, smaller and stealthier than their land-based counterparts, the Agni series of missiles which are medium and intercontinental range nuclear capable ballistic missiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While K family are primarily submarine-fired missiles to be fired from India\u2019s Arihant class nuclear powered platforms, the land and air variants of some of its members have also been developed by the DRDO.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>India has successfully test-fired a new version of the nuclear-capable hypersonic Shaurya missile with a range of 750 kilometres from a defence facility off the Odisha coast.
