{"id":2974,"date":"2019-07-01T07:31:30","date_gmt":"2019-07-01T07:31:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gkseries.com\/blog\/?p=2974"},"modified":"2019-07-12T08:56:33","modified_gmt":"2019-07-12T08:56:33","slug":"nirmala-sitharaman-among-100-most-influential-women-driving-uk-india-relationship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gkseries.com\/blog\/nirmala-sitharaman-among-100-most-influential-women-driving-uk-india-relationship\/","title":{"rendered":"Nirmala Sitharaman among 100 most influential women driving UK-India relationship"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is among the 100 most influential women\ndriving the UK-India relationship forward alongside one of Britain\u2019s\nsenior-most Cabinet ministers Penny Mordaunt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u2018100 Most Influential in UK-India Relations: Celebrating Women\u2019 list was\nlaunched by UK Home Secretary Sajid Javid to mark India Day in the Houses of\nParliament in London.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It credited Sitharaman, also the Minister of Corporate Affairs, as one of\nIndia\u2019s most \u201cpowerful women\u201d who plays a \u201cpivotal\u201d role in the bilateral\nrelationship \u2013 as India\u2019s former defence minister and now finance minister.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHaving studied at the London School of Economics (LSE) and worked in the UK\nin her previous career, Nirmala is familiar with the UK more so than probably\nall her other colleagues,\u201d notes the power list, released by UK-based media\nhouse India Inc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Penny Mordaunt, Britain\u2019s Secretary of State for Defence, is the other\nsenior politician in the list who is credited as the first woman to be assigned\nthe role in the UK Cabinet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWith India emerging as the world\u2019s largest importer of defence products,\nand a significant strategic partner for the UK, Penny plays a crucial role in\nthe UK-India relationship,\u201d her citation notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ruchi Ghanashyam, the Indian High Commissioner to the UK, who is herself\nhonoured in the list, welcomed the compilation as a recognition of the \u201cfront\nand centre role\u201d played by women in the bilateral relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis list highlights the huge potential for the future of the UK and India\nas they continue to forge on together as two great countries. From business to\npolitics, and art and literacy, women are continuing to pave the way in\nbringing together this bold partnership through collaboration and\nrelationships,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The women in the list, now in its third year, hold positions of influence in\nIndia and the UK across 11 broad sectors including politics, technology and\nsustainability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the other prominent names include Indian-origin parliamentarians in\nthe UK like Priti Patel and Baroness Sandy Verma, filmmaker Gurinder Chadha,\nIndian law firm chiefs Zia Mody and Pallavi S Shroff, Apollo Hospitals\u2019\nmanaging director Suneeta Reddy and Nasscom President Debjani Ghosh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe women highlighted in this list hold positions of tremendous influence\nand therefore their inclusion here is as much about the promise they bring, as\nthe success they may have already achieved,\u201d said Manoj Ladwa, Founder of India\nInc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The launch of the list also marked the start of UK-India Week in Britain,\nwhich will include a series of sessions on trade and investment and closer\ncooperation between the UK and India through the course of the week. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>About DRDO<\/strong><br>\nHeadquarters: New Delhi&nbsp;<br>\nFounded: 1958 Motto: &#8220;Strength&#8217;s Origin is in Science&#8221;&nbsp;<br>\nChairman: Dr. G.
