Admiral Kumar served as Navy Chief between 1998 and 2001 and also\noversaw Kargil conflict in 1999.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The book by former Navy Chief\nAdmiral Sushil Kumar reads that 1999 Kargil conflict was Prime Minister Atal\nBihari Vajpayee\u2019s \u201cfinest hour\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He credits\nVajpayee for turning the strategic tactical loss into a massive victory and for\nwhich he gave full credit to Armed Forces. Vajpayee instructed armed to not\ncross LoC (Line of Control), but drive them [Pakistan] away, telling this as\nhis best master stroke Adm. kumar observed that Mr. Vajpayee knew the value of\nrestraint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the wake of\nthe Parliament terror attack (December 13, 2001) Vajpayee wanted to hit a\nPakistani Army camp but was forced to drop plan at last moment as it got\nrelocated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Admiral kumar\nalso says that while then External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh wanted India\nto support United States war on Afghanistan in wake of 9\/11 terrorist attack,\nbut the military chiefs disagreed and Vajpayee diplomatically went with latter\noption.\n\nHe\nmention that <em>Operation Parakram<\/em> that was called after Parliament attack\nwas not the military\u2019s finest hour.\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A book titled \u2018A Prime Minister to Remember- Memories of a Military Chief\u2019, authored by former Navy Chief Admiral Sushil Kumar recently released highlights the key defence related decisions taken by former Prime Minister of India Late Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
