Key-Points<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\nThe States Reorganisation Commission (SRC) constituted by the Central Government of India on 22 December 1953 to recommend the reorganisation of state boundaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In 1955, after nearly two years of study, the Commission recommended that India’s state boundaries should be reorganised to form 14 states and 6 territories. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Against the recommendations of Dhar Commission and JVP Committee popular movements for state\u2019s reorganization on linguistic basis began all over the country. One such movement was Vishal-Andhra Movement \u2013 a movement for separate Andhra; it was led by Potti Sriramulu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Vishal-Andhra movement demanded that Telugu speaking areas of Madras province should be separated and made into a separate Andhra province. But the Central govt. vacillated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Its leader Potti Sriramulu went on an indefinite fast in October 1952 and died after 56 days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This unleashed unrest and violence in Telugu speaking regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The govt. finally gave in and agreed to the demand for a separate Andhra state which came into existence in 1953. Simultaneously, Tamil Nadu was created as a Tamil speaking state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After this demand from other states started coming and for this purpose states reorganization commission was appointed in 1953 by Nehru.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
