{"id":3531,"date":"2019-07-10T09:35:14","date_gmt":"2019-07-10T09:35:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gkseries.com\/blog\/?p=3531"},"modified":"2019-07-11T15:19:17","modified_gmt":"2019-07-11T15:19:17","slug":"kyriakos-mitsotakis-of-new-democratic-party-has-been-sworn-in-as-the-new-prime-minister-of-greece","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gkseries.com\/blog\/kyriakos-mitsotakis-of-new-democratic-party-has-been-sworn-in-as-the-new-prime-minister-of-greece\/","title":{"rendered":"Kyriakos Mitsotakis of New Democratic Party has been sworn-in as the new Prime Minister of Greece"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Kyriakos Mitsotakis has been sworn in as Greece&#8217;s new prime\nminister, a day after his centre-right New Democracy party won a landslide over\nleftist Syriza, which had been in power since 2015.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Official results showed New Democracy gaining 39.85 percent of the vote in Sunday&#8217;s snap election, compared with 31.53 for Syriza, led by outgoing Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mitsotakis, 51, arrived at the presidential palace for the\nofficial swearing-in ceremony accompanied by his wife and three children. He\nthen headed to the prime minister&#8217;s office for a handover of duties and was\nexpected to name his cabinet later in the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his victory speech,&nbsp;Mitsotakis vowed that Greece will\n&#8220;proudly&#8221; enter a post-bailout era of &#8220;jobs, security and\ngrowth&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;A painful cycle has closed,&#8221; the 51-year-old said in a televised\naddress, adding that Greece would &#8220;proudly raise its head again&#8221; on\nhis watch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The election result gave New Democracy an outright majority with 158 seats\nin the 300-member Greek parliament. This marks a significant shift for the\ncrisis-hit country that was run for almost a decade by fragile coalitions of\nideologically divergent parties united by their stance either in favour or\nagainst Greece&#8217;s bailout deals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I asked for a strong mandate to change Greece. You offered it\ngenerously,&#8221; Mitsotakis said in his victory speech. &#8220;From today, a\ndifficult but beautiful fight begins.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For his part, Tsipras said his&nbsp;party&#8217;s loss was &#8220;anything but a\nstrategic defeat&#8221; following an election&nbsp;showing that was much\nstronger than expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I can assure the Greek people that from the benches of the opposition\nwe will be present to protect the interests of people of toil and\ncreativity,&#8221; he said, after calling Mitsotakis to congratulate him on his\nvictory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The other parties that passed the three percent threshold to enter the Greek\nparliament were the centre-left Movement for Change (KINAL), at 8.10 percent\n(22 seats); the Greek Communist Party, at 5.3 percent (15 seats); newcomer\nGreek Solution, a far-right party, at 3.7 percent (10 seats); and MeRa 25,\nanother recently formed party that is led by Yanis Varoufakis, a former Syriza\nfinance minister, at 3.44 percent (nine seats).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>About Greece:<\/strong><br>\n\u2666 Capital: Athens<br>\n\u2666 Currency: Euro<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Kyriakos Mitsotakis has been sworn in as Greece&#8217;s new prime minister, a day after his centre-right New Democracy party won a landslide over leftist Syriza, which had been in power since 2015.
