The first phase of the Rs 105 crore-project was launched\nlast month by chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The centre, expected to have an elephant museum, mahout training centre,\nsuper-specialty hospital, a retirement home and crematorium for the animals,\nwill house orphaned, injured and older elephants. It is being planned on the\nlines of the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage in Sri Lanka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the centre has only 15 elephants so far, officials expect the numbers\nwill go up once work on the infrastructure is complete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thiruvananthapuram Wildlife Warden Y M Shaji Kumar said, \u201cBesides giving\nbest care and protection to orphaned and abandoned elephants we are planning to\ngive an opportunity for people to know more about elephants. They can\nunderstand their behavior and life pattern from a close range.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Elephant expert PS Easa said, \u201cWe have been toying with this idea for some\ntime. This will be a boon for wildlife researchers and veterinary students.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The forest department also plans to admit captive elephants. According to\nthe last elephant census, the state has 507 captive elephants. The Sree Krishna\ntemple in Guruvayur town has 59 elephants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once operational, the centre, spread over 65 hectares of natural forests,\nwill also start an elephant safari and other activities to attract tourists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The centre will also have a training centre for mahouts along with a\nresidential facility for them. There are no authorised training schools for\nmahouts in the country leading to ill-treatment of animals, officials said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>State forest minister K Raju said, \u201cWe will make it a world class centre.
