{"id":3824,"date":"2019-07-17T10:14:30","date_gmt":"2019-07-17T10:14:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gkseries.com\/blog\/?p=3824"},"modified":"2019-07-17T10:14:31","modified_gmt":"2019-07-17T10:14:31","slug":"google-indias-internet-saathi-programme-aims-to-empower-rural-women","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gkseries.com\/blog\/google-indias-internet-saathi-programme-aims-to-empower-rural-women\/","title":{"rendered":"Google India&#8217;s Internet Saathi programme aims to empower rural women"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Google India&#8217;s &#8216;Internet Saathi&#8217; programme which aims to empower rural women how to use the Internet has now added two more states \u00a0Punjab and Odisha thus reaching 2.6 lakh villages in 20 states, the company announced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gkseries.com\/blog\/current-affairs-quiz-2019-daily-gk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Daily Current Affairs Quiz 2019<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Launched as a pilot\nproject in 2015 along with Tata Trusts, &#8216;Internet Saathi&#8217; programme focuses on\neducating women how to use the Internet, who then impart training to other\nwomen in their community and neighbouring villages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the four-year\njourney, 70,000 trained &#8216;Internet Saathis&#8217; are using the Internet to drive\npositive change in their communities and have already benefited over 2.6 crore\nfellow women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It is\nremarkable to see the passion of women in rural India, who are learning about\nthe Internet, not just for their own needs but for their families, kids and\ntheir communities,&#8221; said Neha Barjatya, Chief Internet Saathi, Google\nIndia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While some have\ngone ahead and started their own micro-business (stitching, honeybee farming\nand beauty parlours), many others are empowering their families and communities\nwith new skills to enhance their livelihood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Then there\nare those who are driving awareness for issues like girl child education,\nmenstrual hygiene and more,&#8221; Ms Barjatya added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Punjab, the\nprogramme will cover around 5,000 villages. In Odisha, it will cover over\n16,000 villages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;For inclusive growth and societal progress, it is imperative that women in rural India are provided with adequate opportunities and knowledge. This has been made possible through the Internet Saathi programme,&#8221; said Raman Kalyanakrishnan, Head &#8211; Strategy, Tata Trusts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>About Google Interview<\/strong><br>Google interviewed over 2,500 people across rural India to understand the impact that providing access has on their livelihood.\u00a0<br>The study showed that about 70 percent of Internet Saathis are seen as a source of information in their village people are coming to them consistently for answers to help children with schoolwork<br>Eight in 10 Saathis and their beneficiaries believe people in their village respect them more.<br>Three in 10 Saathis and two in 10 beneficiaries have set up some form of business.
