The State Department said it took action after finding credible evidence they were involved in the violence two years ago that led about 740,000 Rohingya to flee across the border to Bangladesh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gkseries.com\/blog\/current-affairs-quiz-2019-daily-gk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Daily Current Affairs Quiz 2019<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;With this announcement, the United States is the first\ngovernment to publicly take action with respect to the most senior leadership\nof the Burmese military,&#8221; Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a\nstatement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We remain concerned that the Burmese government has taken no actions\nto hold accountable those responsible for human rights violations and abuses,\nand there are continued reports of the Burmese military committing human rights\nviolations and abuses throughout the country,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also sanctioned were Deputy Commander-in-Chief Soe Win, Brigadier General\nThan Oo and Brigadier General Aung Aung, as well as the families of all four\nofficers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Buddhist-majority Myanmar refuses to grant the mostly Muslim Rohingya\ncitizenship or basic rights and refers to them as &#8220;Bengalis&#8221;,\ninferring that the Rohingya are undocumented immigrants from Bangladesh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>United Nations investigators say the violence warrants the prosecution of\ntop generals for &#8220;genocide&#8221; and the International Criminal Court has\nstarted a preliminary probe.<br>\n<br>\nPompeo repeated the 2017 finding of his predecessor, Rex Tillerson, that the\nkillings amounted to &#8220;ethnic cleansing&#8221; &#8211; while stopping short of\nusing the term genocide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pompeo voiced particular outrage that Myanmar in May ordered the release of\nseven soldiers convicted of killing Rohingya villagers, serving less time than\ntwo Reuters journalists jailed for more than 500 days after exposing the\ndeaths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He called it an &#8220;egregious example of the continued and severe lack of\naccountability for the military and its senior leadership&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sanctions notably do not affect Aung San Suu Kyi, the former political\nprisoner who has risen to become the country&#8217;s de-facto civilian ruler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Nobel laureate has been criticised over her &#8220;indifference&#8221; to\nthe atrocities committed by the military against the Rohingya, considered\n&#8220;the most prosecuted minority in the world&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sanctions are the most visible sign of US disappointment with Myanmar,\nformerly known as Burma, since it launched political reforms in 2011, with the\nmilitary rulers reconciling with Washington and eventually allowing an elected\npolitical leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Matthew Smith, the cofounder and chief executive officer at Fortify Rights, welcomed the sanctions but said the US could do more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>About USA<\/strong><br>Capital: Washington, D.C<br>President: Donald Trump\u00a0<br>Vice President: Mike Pence\u00a0 <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The US bans Myanmar army chief over Rohingya minority &#8216;ethnic cleansing&#8217;.
