The Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993 was enacted to provide for the constitution of a National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) and the Human Rights Courts for protection of human rights. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gkseries.com\/blog\/current-affairs-quiz-2019-daily-gk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Daily Current Affairs Quiz 2019<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The NHRC has proposed certain amendments to the Act to\naddress the concerns raised at certain global platforms. Besides this, certain\nState Governments have also proposed for amendment of the Act, as they have\nbeen facing difficulties in finding suitable candidates to the post of\nChairperson of the respective State Commissions owing to the existing\neligibility criteria to the said post. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;In view of the above, it has become necessary to amend\ncertain provisions of the said Act. The proposed amendments will enable both\nthe Commission as well as the State Commissions to be more compliant with the\nParis Principles concerning its autonomy, independence, pluralism and\nwide-ranging functions in order to effectively protect and promote human\nrights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;The\nProtection of Human Rights (Amendment) Bill, 2019, inter alia, provides <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>that\n     a person who has been a Judge of the Supreme Court is also made eligible\n     to be appointed as Chairperson of the Commission in addition to the person\n     who has been the Chief Justice of India; <\/li><li>to\n     increase the Members of the Commission from two to three of which, one\n     shall be a woman; <\/li><li>to\n     include Chairperson of the National Commission for Backward Classes, Chairperson\n     of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights and the Chief\n     Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities as deemed Members of the\n     Commission; <\/li><li>to\n     reduce the term of the Chairperson and Members of the Commission and the\n     State Commissions from five to three years and shall be eligible for\n     re-appointment; <\/li><li>to\n     provide that a person who has been a Judge of a High Court is also made\n     eligible to be appointed as Chairperson of the State Commission in\n     addition to the person who has been the Chief Justice of the High Court;\n     and,<\/li><li>to\n     confer upon State Commissions, the functions relating to human rights\n     being discharged by the Union territories, other than the Union territory\n     of Delhi, which will be dealt with by the Commission. <\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lok Sabha passes The Protection of Human Rights (Amendment) Bill, 2019 for consideration and passing in Lok Sabha.
