Researchers have discovered the new vine snake species in the southern Western Ghats. The species, &#8216;Proahaetulla antiqua&#8217;, was first discovered in 2011 and looked similar to &#8216;Ahaetulla dispar&#8217;, a small-sized vine snake with similar morphological characters. The new species faces no major extinction threats at the moment, researchers revealed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gkseries.com\/blog\/current-affairs-quiz-2019-daily-gk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Daily Current Affairs Quiz 2019<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How researchers confirmed?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Researchers confirmed about their finding with integrative\ntaxonomy. &nbsp;Integrative taxonomy is an amalgamation of different lines of\nevidence, from teeth, genetics and molecular phylogenetics, structure and bone\nanalysis to traditional taxonomy that helped the researchers to identify a new\ngenus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Major Highlights<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 This research and finding report was recently published in\nthe journal PLOS ONE in collaboration with researchers from Chennai Snake Park,\nChennai and Bombay Natural History Society, Mumbai, the team has described the\nunique features of this snake.<br>\n\u2022 Latest discovery by researchers sheds light on the early colonisation of\nmembers of the family Ahaetuliinae in various parts of Asia, such as Peninsular\nIndia and Sri Lanka.<br>\n\u2022 This family of snake includes 62 non-venomous species of snakes belonging to\nfour genera: Ahaetulla (vine snakes), Chrysopelea (flying snakes), Dendrelaphis\n(bronzebacks) and Dryophiops (whip snakes). <br>\n\u2022 Most of these snakes are located in south and south-east Asia, and parts of\nEast Asia. Dendrelaphis is the largest genus, with 45 species.<br>\n\u2022 Latest discovery of ancient vine snake will not only help to know more about\nthe evolution of vine snakes but also the evolutionary history of the Western\nGhats. The Western Ghats are older than Himalayas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>About Western Ghats of\nIndia<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Western Ghats of India extends along the west coast of India\nfrom River Tapti in the north to the southern corner of India. Western Ghats\nwas declared as world heritage site on July 2012 by UNESCO. Western Ghats are a\nhabitat of more than 5,000 plant and 140 species, 16 of them are endemic. Apart\nfrom this, 179 types of different species of amphibians found in the Western\nGhats. The Western Ghats starts right from the coastal areas of Gujarat, goes\nto Maharashtra and Goa.
