Ms. Patel had been a prominent member of the \u2018Back Boris\u2019 campaign for the Conservative Party leadership and was widely tipped for the plum post in his frontline team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gkseries.com\/blog\/current-affairs-quiz-2019-daily-gk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Daily Current Affairs Quiz 2019<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is important that the Cabinet should represent modern\nBritain as well as a modern Conservative Party,\u201d she said, just hours before\nher appointment was announced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A long-standing Eurosceptic,  <strong>Priti Patel<\/strong>  had steered the Vote Leave campaign in the lead up to the June 2016 referendum in favour of Britain\u2019s exit from the European Union (EU).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 47-year-old was first elected as a Conservative MP\nfor Witham in Essex in 2010 and gained prominence in the then David Cameron led\nTory government as his Indian Diaspora Champion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She went on to be appointed to junior ministerial posts,\nTreasury minister in 2014 and then Employment Minister after the 2015 General\nElection, before Theresa May promoted her to Secretary of State in the\nDepartment for International Development (DfID) in 2016 until she was forced to\nresign the post in 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWith Boris Johnson leading the Conservative Party and as\nPrime Minister, the United Kingdom will have a Leader who believes in Britain,\nwill implement a new vision for the future of the country and a roadmap to move\nforward and thrive as a self-governing nation that re-establishes our ties with\nour friends and allies around the world such as India, she told PTI after Mr.\nJohnson won a landslide victory in the Tory leadership contest this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe is committed to securing new and improved trading\nrelationship with our friends in India and ensuring that the values we share \u2014\nthe rule of law, democracy, and dynamic entrepreneurial spirit should be at the\nheart of one of our most important partners on the global stage, said Ms.\nPatel, who has been a champion of India-UK ties since her time as Indian\nDiaspora Champion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>India-UK relations<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Gujarati-origin politician, who is a prominent guest\nat all major Indian diaspora events in the UK, is seen as a avid supporter of\nPrime Minister Narendra Modi in the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a member of the UK Parliament\u2019s influential Foreign\nAffairs Committee (FAC), she was part of the team that recently released its\ndamning report warning that the UK was falling behind in the race to engage\nwith India at the end of a lengthy Global Britain and India parliamentary\ninquiry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur report calls for the government to look again at the\nrelationship between the UK and India,\u201d Ms. Patel said, in reference to the\n\u2018Building Bridges: Reawakening UK-India ties\u2019 report released last month to\nmark the first-ever India Day in the UK Parliament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis should be a special relationship based upon the\nliving bridge between our two great countries and a partnership we should be\nnurturing. The report covers many of the missed opportunities where the UK\nshould be proactively and bilaterally enhancing our ties. We are soon to have a\nnew PM in the UK, which will provide a welcome change in how we engage India\u2019s\nre-elected PM Modi, she said at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She once again returns as the senior-most British Indian\nmember of the UK Cabinet, having been forced to resign in November 2017 as\nInternational Development secretary amid a scandal over allegedly failing to\ndisclose meetings with officials in Israel without informing the UK Foreign\nOffice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She had maintained it was a private visit and Boris\nJohnson, then UK foreign secretary, spoke out at the time to back her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Describing Ms. Patel as a \u201cgood friend\u201d with whom he\nworked closely together for Global Britain, he had said it was \u201cquite right\nthat she meets with people and organisations overseas\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Ms. Patel was effectively sacked by Theresa May,\nforcing her to the Parliament backbenches from where she continued to voice her\ncriticism of Ms. May\u2019s Brexit plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She was among the rebel Tory MPs who consistently voted\nagainst the former Prime Minister\u2019s Withdrawal Agreement with the EU as a bad\ndeal for Britain, which ultimately sealed Ms. May\u2019s term as Prime Minister.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Former interior minister Sajid Javid is to take over from\nPhilip Hammond as finance minister in his first cabinet appointment, while\nBrexit hardliner Dominic Raab to be Britain\u2019s foreign secretary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr. Javid, a former banker from a modest background, was\na contender for the premiership but endorsed Mr. Johnson when he failed to get\nenough support from fellow Conservative MPs.
