{"id":41407,"date":"2021-04-26T05:28:44","date_gmt":"2021-04-26T05:28:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gkseries.com\/blog\/?p=41407"},"modified":"2021-04-26T05:28:45","modified_gmt":"2021-04-26T05:28:45","slug":"nasa-extracts-breathable-oxygen-from-thin-martian-air","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gkseries.com\/blog\/nasa-extracts-breathable-oxygen-from-thin-martian-air\/","title":{"rendered":"NASA extracts breathable oxygen from thin Martian air"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>NASA has logged another extra-terrestrial first on its latest mission to Mars: converting carbon dioxide from the Martian atmosphere into pure, breathable oxygen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gkseries.com\/blog\/category\/daily-quiz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Daily Current Affairs Quiz 2021<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The unprecedented extraction of oxygen on Mars was achieved by a device called MOXIE aboard Perseverance, a six-wheeled science rover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MOXIE is short for Mars Oxygen In-Situ Resource Utilization Experiment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It produced about 5 grams of oxygen, equivalent to roughly 10 minutes\u2019 worth of breathing for an astronaut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NASA is planning that future human missions would take scaled-up versions of Moxie with them to the Red Planet rather than try to carry all the oxygen needed to sustain them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mars&#8217; atmosphere is dominated by carbon dioxide (CO\u2082) at a concentration of 96 per cent.
