Daily Current Affairs Quiz 2019<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nMr. Pattnaik was among the 15 top sand artists selected from across the\nworld to participate in the 2019 Revere Beach International Sand Sculpting\nFestival in Boston, Massachusetts. He won the People\u2019s Choice Award for his sand\nsculpture \u2018Stop Plastic Pollution, Save Our Ocean\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis is a very big award and honour for me in the US. This award is for\nIndia, which is also doing a great deal to beat plastic pollution\u201d and raise\nawareness on this very important matter, Mr. Pattnaik told PTI over phone from\nBoston.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The People\u00b4s Choice award winning sculpture showed a turtle caught in a plastic bag and a fish with plastic trash such as slippers, bottles and glass inside its body. The tail of the fish is in the mouth of a human, signifying how plastic pollution in the oceans is adversely impacting human beings also when they consume sea food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\n\n\n\u201cThousands of people voting for my sculpture that highlights the problem of\nplastic pollution underscores that the public too is concerned about our oceans\ngetting polluted and supports the urgent need to take action to save our oceans\nand planet,\u201d said Mr. Pattnaik, who is known to convey social messages and\nthemes through his art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Amid loud cheers and applause, Mr. Pattnaik received the People\u2019s Choice\nmedal from Revere Beach Partnership Board Member Adrienne Sacco-Maguire during\nan award ceremony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Odisha-native said that through his sculpture he wants to highlight that\nhuman activity is destroying the oceans and humans are also getting impacted by\npolluted waterways as they consume food from the sea and rivers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Describing the award as very special, Mr. Pattnaik said, \u201cthis award is not\nonly for me but for the people. This is a public awareness sculpture. Those who\nhave voted for my sculpture have voted for action on plastic pollution.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Several Indians also showed up at the festival with the Indian tricolour and\nextended their support for Mr. Pattnaik, who expressed gratitude to the Indian\nConsulate General in New York and its officials for their support. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Congratulating Mr. Pattnaik on the win, India\u2019s Consul General in New York\nSandeep Chakravorty said, \u201cwe are delighted that our very own Sudarsan has won\nthe People\u2019s Choice Award at this prestigious world event.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mr. Chakravorty thanked the Indian Community of Greater Boston area and all\nover US for their support, saying the theme of Pattnaik\u2019s sculpture \u2018Stop\nPlastic Pollution, Save Our Ocean\u2019 is very topical and relevant and has\nresonated with the public. Yet another feather in the cap of our genius from the\nholy City of Jagannath Puri.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hosted by non-profit organisation Revere Beach Partnership, the festival,\nnow in its 16th year, ran from July 26-28 and was attended by close to a\nmillion people. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
One of the largest sand sculpting festivals in the world, it sees\nparticipation from leading sand sculptors from around the world. Pattnaik was\nthe sole representative from India and Asia.
