Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, 54, replaced K.J. Ramesh, who headed the India Meteorological Department (IMD) since 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gkseries.com\/blog\/current-affairs-quiz-2019-daily-gk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Daily Current Affairs Quiz 2019<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ramesh\u2019s time at the helm was marked by several extreme\nweather events, including Cyclone Fani, the most intense storm over the Bay of\nBengal to make landfall on India\u2019s east coast since 1999. To Mohapatra\u2019s\ncredit, the accurate prediction of the cyclonic storms in recent memory helped\nminimize the loss of life in Odisha.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>IMD had earned praise from the United Nations for\nforecasting the severity of Fani and its approach in issuing alerts in the run\nup to the event in May, which helped the government ensure adequate\npreparedness. Under Ramesh, the department strengthened its forecasting of\nsevere weather events by using coupled dynamic models and high performance\ncomputers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mohapatra, the head of services since 2016, was also at the\nhelm of affairs of the Regional Specialized Meteorological Centre (RSMC),\nTropical Cyclone, since 2008, and led the team that provided early warning for\ncyclones Phailin, Hudhud, Vardah, Titli, Sagar, Mekunu and Fani. This made him\npopular as the \u2018Cyclone Man of India\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mohapatra is also a permanent representative for India at\nthe World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and was an elected member of the\nexecutive council of the organization since June 2013.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A meteorologist for 26 years, Mohapatra joined IMD\u2019s Pune\noffice in 1992. He also worked at the interim test range of the Defence\nResearch and Development Organisation in Balasore, Odisha.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mohapatra is the chairman of various committees, including\nthe task force for the finalisation of meteorological payloads of the INSAT-4\nsatellites to be launched in 2025 and the committee for revision of guidelines\nof the National Disaster Management Authority for cyclone management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">India Meteorological Department: <\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The IMD is responsible for the weather and climate-related\nforecasts in the country.
