According to sources at the Ministry of Science and Technology, a proposed agreement has already been sent to the Law Ministry for its vetting after it was approved by the Cabinet Committee on Public Purchase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gkseries.com\/blog\/current-affairs-quiz-2019-daily-gk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Daily Current Affairs Quiz 2019<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Addressing the proceedings, Science and Technology Secretary\nAnwar Hossain said:&#8221;Once the proposed agreement receives the vetting, the\nBangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC) will proceed with a plan to have it\nsigned with a Russian uranium supply company in September next.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The BAEC has been implementing the nuclear power project as\na government entity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Previously on June 19, the Cabinet Committee on Public\nPurchase approved the proposal on the nuclear fuel supply for the RNPP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As per the proposal, Russian state-owned firm TVEL Joint\nStock Company will supply the fuel for the \u201centire lifetime\u201d of the 2,400MW\nRNPP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The plant will have two units, each having 1200MW power\ngeneration capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the inter-governmental agreement (IGA) signed\nwith the Russian Federation in November 2011, Bangladesh will have to purchase\nnuclear fuel from the Russian company for the entire lifetime of the power\nplant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each unit of the power plant will have to reload one-thirds\nof the total required nuclear fuel in every 18 months and the first, second and\nthird reload will be provided by the Russian firm for free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each reloading of nuclear fuel will cost $62 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was also mentioned in the Science and Technology\nMinistry&#8217;s proposal that the price of one kilogram of uranium which is used as\nnuclear fuel is $550, and this price will remain unchanged till 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the cost of fuel will be reviewed and reset after\nevery 10 years of supply, said the proposal. The plant&#8217;s operational lifetime\nis estimated to be 50 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier in January, 2019, Dhaka and Moscow inked a proposed\nagreement on nuclear fuel supply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Bangladesh government has engaged Russian nuclear energy\nfirm Rosatom as contractor for the RNPP project at a cost of $12.65 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Besides, the officials said, Rosatom has already been paid\n$550 million for a feasibility study and design purpose of the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Initially, it was said by the contractor that the first unit\nof the RNPP will come into operation by 2022 while the second unit by 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A representative of the Rosatom informed that the first\nreactor of the plant will come into Bangladesh in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But officials of the Ministry of Science and Technology are\ndoubtful about the start of the operation as per schedule.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bangladesh signed agreement with Russia for uranium supply Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP) project.
