Daily Current Affairs Quiz 2019<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\nE-commerce companies must self-declare compliance and also\nprovide a way for customers to contact them directly, said the proposed\ne-Commerce Guidelines for consumer protection 2019, published on the Department\nof Consumer Affairs website. The department invited parties to provide feedback\nby 16 September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Among the key guidelines are those that require platforms\nlike Amazon and Flipkart to declare all details about their sellers including\naddress, website and email address. The platforms are also required to display\nterms of contract with the seller relating to return, refund, exchange,\nwarranty, delivery and mode of payments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Earlier this year, India tightened rules for e-commerce\nplatforms after complaints from small shops and domestic sellers. Amazon and\nFlipkart are now banned from striking exclusive arrangements with sellers,\noffering deep discounts or holding any business interest in online merchants on\ntheir websites. Groups representing small traders have continued to allege that\nlarge platforms prioritize and sell products of a favored few vendors with whom\nthey have commercial linkages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The proposed consumer safeguards could come in handy as the\ncountry works on a comprehensive set of rules for the world\u2019s fastest growing\ne-commerce market. \u201cThe larger e-commerce policy is being drafted and is\nexpected to take several months, so the government is taking immediate steps to\nenhance protection of consumer rights,” said Sachin Taparia, chief\nexecutive officer of LocalCircles India Pvt., a social community which helped\ngather inputs from consumers through polls and surveys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After the formal consultation is completed by mid September,\nthe government is likely to include the proposals in its Consumer Protection\nAct, Taparia said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The draft guidelines seek to protect personally-identifiable\ninformation of customers and set a 14-day limit for payments toward refund\nrequests. Counterfeit products cannot be listed on e-commerce websites or\ncompanies could be held liable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The department of consumer affairs proposed that every\ne-commerce entity publish the name and contact details of its grievance\nofficer, who would have to address complaints within one month from the date of\nreceipt.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
