The helicopters bolster anti-surface and anti-submarine\nmissions, and handle secondary missions like replenishment, search and rescue,\nand communications relay, the agency said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The Republic of Korea will use the enhanced capability\nas a deterrent to regional threats and to strengthen its homeland\ndefense,” it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Seahawk is made by the Sikorsky division of US defence\nmanufacturer Lockheed Martin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The sale was approved after Trump tweeted on Wednesday that\nthe two countries had entered negotiations on South Korea paying for the\ndefence umbrella the United States provides the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Over the past many decades, the US has been paid very\nlittle by South Korea,” Trump wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“South Korea is a very wealthy nation that now feels an\nobligation to contribute to the military defence provided by the United States\nof America. The relationship between the two countries is a very good one!”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The two countries have been in a security alliance since the\n1950-53 Korean war, which ended with an armistice rather than a peace treaty –\nwith more than 28,000 US troops stationed in the South to guard against threats\nfrom North Korea.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
