The Railway Board has given its approval to the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) to restore the mechanism of charging service charge from passengers booking online tickets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gkseries.com\/blog\/current-affairs-quiz-2019-daily-gk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Daily Current Affairs Quiz 2019<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a letter dated August 3, the Board has said the IRCTC,\nrailways ticketing and tourism arm, had made a &#8220;detailed case&#8221; for\nthe restoration of service charge on booking of e-ticket and the matter has\nbeen examined by the &#8220;competent authority&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It further said the Finance Ministry has contended that the\nscheme of waiving of service charges was a temporary one and that the railway\nministry could begin charging e-tickets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;In view of the advice given by the Ministry of\nFinance, the competent authority has decided that IRCTC may take a suitable\ndecision on the imposition\/restoration of convenience fee\/service charges and\nthe quantum to be levied,&#8221; the letter said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Officials say that after service charges were discontinued,\nIRCTC saw a 26 per cent drop in Internet ticketing revenue in financial year\n2016-17.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>IRCTC used to levy a service charge of \u20b920 on every non-AC e\nticket and \u20b940 for every AC ticket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>IRCTC will now have to decide whether it will keep the earlier charges or increase it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\nAbout the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC)\n\n<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation is a subsidiary of the Indian Railways that handles the catering, tourism and online ticketing operations of the Indian railways, with around 5,50,000 to 6,00,000 bookings every day is the world&#8217;s second-busiest and highest of 15 to 16 lakh tickets every day.\u00a0<br> <strong>Headquarters<\/strong>: New Delhi<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>E-tickets bought through IRCTC will get more costly as the Indian Railways has decided to restore service fee charges, almost three years after they were withdrawn to promote digital payments, a pet project of the Narendra Modi-led BJP government.
