Tamil Nadu state government has launched a vaccination programme for children against Pneumonia and Brain Fever under the National Vaccination Scheme at the Egmore Children\u2019s hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The State Government aims to vaccinate nine lakh 23 thousand children under the programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seventy thousand vaccines have been procured and are in stock. Children who are affected by muscular dystrophy will be given special treatment at a dedicated hospital in Chennai.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More than 2,000 children are affected by the disease in the state and in Chennai alone, 200 children have been identified for muscular dystrophy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sumit Nagal won India\u2019s first Olympic singles match in 25 years<\/span><\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sumit Nagal beat Uzbekistan\u2019s Denis Istomin and became the first Indian since 1996 to win a singles match at the Olympics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He is currently the highest-ranked Indian singles tennis player and since 2018, he has been a regular member of India’s national Davis Cup squad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Technology innovation hub to find cyber security for drones<\/span><\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

IIT- Kanpur launched the first technology innovation hub to find cybersecurity solutions for anti-drones technologies, intrusion detection systems, block-chain and cyber-physical systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As many as 13 start-ups and 25 research and development principal investigators were selected after a rigorous application process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The presence of cutting-edge technology in cybersecurity is accompanied by an increasing need to protect digital assets and deploy solutions for the common public as well as government and industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

IIT Kanpur\u2019s C3i hub will focus on safeguarding cyberspace including critical infrastructure. The government is promoting Make-in India cybersecurity solutions to counter rising threats from neighbouring countries, particularly China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Centre reduced import duty on Masur dal to zero to boost domestic supply<\/span><\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Union Government has reduced the import duty on masur dal to zero. It has also cut the Agriculture Infrastructure Development Cess on the lentil or masur to 10 per cent from 20 per cent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The move will boost domestic supply and check its price rise. A notification in this regard was tabled in both houses of Parliament by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As per the notification, customs duty has been reduced from 10 per cent to nil on lentils or masur dal originated in or exported from countries other than the US.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Besides, the basic customs duty has been reduced from 30 per cent to 20 per cent on lentils originating in or exported from the US. The estimated revenue implication of this notification is about 1100 crore rupees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Myanmar economy to shrink by 18 percent in 2020-21<\/span><\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The economy of Myanmar is predicted to shrink by 18 percent in the fiscal year between October 2020 to September 2021, amid the ongoing political unrest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The political turmoil and the rapidly rising third wave of COVID 19 is seriously impacting the economy already weakened by the pandemic of 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The decline in GDP on top of the contraction last year means that the Myanmar economy could become 30 percent smaller relative to 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The shrinking of the economy may lead to a loss of 1 million jobs and further decline in the income of workers due to reduced hours or wages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The share of the Myanmar population living below the poverty line is also likely to double by the beginning of 2022 compared to 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The World Bank report points out that the Myanmar Kyat has depreciated by about 23 percent against the US dollar since late January. Combined with trade disruptions it has led to sharp price rise for some imported products including fuel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Karnataka Governor accepted resignation submitted by CM<\/span><\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot has accepted the resignation submitted by Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The governor appoints the leader of the largest party of the house or leader chosen by the largest coalition to become the chief minister.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The governor may exercise situational discretion if no party has clear majority. He may ask a leader to become chief minister and then prove his majority on floor of the house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In case the chief minister dies and no successor is present then the governor may appoint one at his discretion but if the ruling party has a nominee then the governor has no choice but to appoint that person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CM must become member of either house within 6 months or else he ceases to become the CM. CM occupies position at the governors pleasure but the governor can\u2019t dismiss him till he has a majority in the house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The West Bengal state government has set up Inquiry Commission to probe reported interception through spyware.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The commission would investigate the matter and submit its report to the State Government within six months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spyware is loosely defined as malicious software designed to enter your computer device, gather data about you, and forward it to a third-party without your consent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spyware can also refer to legitimate software that monitors your data for commercial purposes like advertising.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are several types of spyware such as browser hijack, adware, keyboard loggers and much more. Each type of such malicious software has its own technique of working.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1st consignment of vegetables dispatched to UAE from Uttarakhand<\/span><\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The first consignment of vegetables was dispatched to United Arab Emirates from Uttarakhand, in a major boost to agricultural produce exports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has been carrying out promotional activities to bring Uttarakhand on the agricultural and processed food products export map of India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

APEDA is planning to provide financial assistance for setting up a pack house in Uttarakhand. APEDA would continue to focus on the Uttarakhand region both in terms of capacity building, quality upgradation and infrastructure development by linking buyers to farmers through strengthening the entire supply chain of agricultural produce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

National web portal for sharing R&D facilities I-STEM enters Phase-II<\/span><\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I-STEM project has been accorded extension for five years, until 2026 and enters its second phase with added features.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Indian Science Technology and Engineering facilities Map (I-STEM), the national web portal for sharing R&D facilities was formally launched in January 2020 by the Honorable Prime Minister Narendra Modi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I-STEM (www.istem.gov.in) is an initiative of Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Govt. of India (PSA, GOI) under the aegis of Prime Minister Science, Technology and Innovation Advisory Council (PM-STIAC) mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The goal of I-STEM is to strengthen the R&D ecosystem of the country by connecting researchers with resources, in part by promoting technologies and scientific equipment development indigenously, and providing necessary supplies and supports to researchers by enabling them an access to existing publicly funded R&D facilities in the country through the I-STEM web portal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under Phase II, the portal will hostindigenous technology products listedthrough a digital catalogue. The portal will also provide a platform for the various City Knowledge and Innovation Clusters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

India is now in the category of world\u2019s top agricultural exporters<\/span><\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

India has entered the top 10 list of the countries exporting agricultural produce in the year 2019 with a sizable share in the export of rice, cotton, soya beans and meat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As per a report by World Trade Organization (WTO) on the trends in world agricultural trade in the past 25 years, India and Mexico with 3.1% and 3.4% share in global Agri exports, respectively, replaced New Zealand (9th) and Malaysia (7th) as the largest exporters across the globe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The United States of America (USA), which topped the list in 1995 with 22.2% share of world Agri export, was overtaken by the European Union (EU) in 2019 with 16.1% global Agri share.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The USA\u2019s exports reduced to 13.8% in 2019 while Brazil maintained its ranking as the third-largest exporter by increasing its share from 4.8% in 1995 to 7.8% in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

India is also the third-largest cotton exporter (7.6%), and the fourth-largest importer (10%) in 2019. In the largest traded Agri product, soya beans, India (0.1%) has a meagre share, but was ranked ninth in the world. In the \u201cmeat and edible meat offal\u201d category, India secured 8th rank in the world with a global share of 4%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

335 sportspersons from Russia competing with athletes from around the world<\/span><\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There are 335 sportspersons from Russia competing with athletes from around the world, at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Yet, unlike their counterparts, the Russians are not allowed to use their country\u2019s name, flag and anthem, and are competing under the acronym ROC, meaning Russian Olympic Committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is because Russia, which has historically been among the world\u2019s top sporting nations, has been \u2018banned\u2019 from the Tokyo Olympics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In December 2019, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) banned Russia for four years from competing in international events, including the Tokyo Olympics and the FIFA World Cup in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ban was enacted after new revelations came up about a doping programme that Russia had been accused of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ban is not outright, and 335 athletes from Russia are still playing at Tokyo, only under the name ROC, meaning Russian Olympic Committee \u2013 the team that sends Russian athletes to all Games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In effect, the \u2018punishment\u2019 only consists of forcing them to not use Russia\u2019s name, flag or national anthem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ROC players are only those who have been able to prove that they were not part of the doping scam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No Caste Enumeration Other Than SC and ST in Upcoming Census<\/span><\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The government has decided as a matter of policy not to enumerate caste-wise population other than SCs and STs in census.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every Census in independent India from 1951 to 2011 has published data on Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, but not on other castes. Before that, every Census until 1931 had data on caste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, in 1941, caste-based data was collected but not published.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the absence of such a census, there is no proper estimate for the population of OBCs, various groups within the OBCs, and others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Mandal Commission estimated the OBC population at 52%, some other estimates have been based on National Sample Survey data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Demand for a caste census usually come from among those belonging to Other Backward Classes (OBC) and other deprived sections, while sections from the upper castes oppose the idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scientists Identify Moon-Forming Disk Around Planet Outside Solar System<\/span><\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Scientists have clearly identified for the first time a moon-forming area around a planet beyond our solar system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ring-shaped area surrounds an exoplanet called PDS 70c. An exoplanet is a planet that orbits a star outside our solar system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The identified region is known as a circumplanetary disk. This is an area surrounding a planet where moons and other satellite objects can form. The disk is made up of gas and dust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Researchers from the ALMA observatory, which operates from Chile\u2019s Atacama desert, made the discovery. ALMA is the largest radio telescope in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PDS 70c is a gas giant discovered in 2019, the U.S. space agency NASA says. It is one of two exoplanets orbiting the orange-colored star PDS 70.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
