The Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Award is to honour those who work for promoting scientific growth, humanities and students’ welfare and the awardees should hail from Tamil Nadu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The award carries 8 gm gold medal, Rs. five lakh in cash and\na citation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A native of Kanyakumari District of Tamil Nadu, the citation\nhailed him as “Rocket Man” and traced his humble origins to his\nsplendid rise in career which includes a stint as director of the Vikram\nSarabhai Space Centre and Liquid Propulsion Centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mr Sivan’s leadership led to the “historical\nachievement of most successful GSLV flight with indigenous cryogenic\nstage.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Under his tutelage, ISRO successfully launched Chandrayan 2,\nthe second mission to the moon on July 22 and he was the chief architect of\nSITARA, a 6D trajectory simulation software, the citation read.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He worked on the design and development of launch vehicles\nfor ISRO and has immensely contributed towards end to end mission planning,\ndesign, and mission integration and analysis, the government said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The 62-year-old space scientist was a first graduate in his\nfamily, who got a Bachelor’s degree in engineering from the Madras Institute of\nTechnology in 1980.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Completing his Master’s degree in aerospace engineering from\nthe Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru, he later joined ISRO and he was a\nrecipient of several awards including Dr Vikram Sarabhai Research Award (1999).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mr Sivan was scheduled to receive the award at the\nIndependence Day celebrations at Fort St George in Chennai.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Following the death of former President A P J Abdul Kalam in\n2015, former Chief Minister, late J Jayalalithaa, had then announced an award\nin his name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She had also announced that Dr Kalam’s birthday (October 15)\nwill be observed as “Youth Renaissance Day.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The first Kalam award was presented by Jayalalithaa in 2015\nto ISRO scientist N Valarmathi and it is given on Independence Day every year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
