Commemoration of 100th year of Madras Legislative Council<\/span><\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

President Ram Nath Kovind addressed the commemoration of the 100th year of the Madras Legislative Council in Chennai.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tamil Nadu Legislative Council was the upper house of the former bicameral legislature of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It began its existence as Madras Legislative Council, the first provincial legislature for Madras Presidency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was initially created as an advisory body in 1861, by the British colonial government. It was established by the first Indian Council Act of 1861, enacted in the British parliament in the aftermath of the Indian Rebellion of 1857.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its role and strength were later expanded by the second Council Act of 1892. Limited election was introduced in 1909.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Council became a unicameral legislative body in 1921 and eventually the upper chamber of a bicameral legislature in 1937.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After India became independent in 1947, it continued to be the upper chamber of the legislature of Madras State, one of the successor states to the Madras Presidency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was renamed as the Tamil Nadu Legislative Council when the state was renamed as Tamil Nadu in 1969. The Council was abolished by the M. G. Ramachandran administration on 1 November 1986.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Myanmar army chief appoints himself Prime Minister<\/span><\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs & Trade Marks (CGPDTM) is located at Mumbai.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It functions under the Department of Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce & Industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Controller General supervises the working of the Patents Act, 1970, the Designs Act, 2000 and the Trade Marks Act, 1999 and also renders advice to the Government on matters relating to these subjects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Head Office of the \u2018Patent office\u2019 is in Kolkata, \u2018Trade Mark Registry\u2019 is in Mumbai and the \u2018GI Registry\u2019 is in Chennai.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

National Mountain Climbing Day 2021<\/span><\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

National Mountain Climbing Day is celebrated on 1 August each year to honour Bobby Matthews and his friend Josh Madigan, for successfully climbing the 46th peak of New York State’s Adirondack Mountains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On August 1, 2015, Mathews and Madigan managed to successfully scale all the 46 peaks of the Adirondack Mountains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On this day, they triumphantly scaled the 46th peak, also known as the White Face Mountain. Since then, the day is observed in their honour. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to geologists, a mountain is a landform that rises about 1,000 feet or more above its surrounding area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A chain or series of mountains that are close together is known as a mountain range. They are also significant in influencing weather patterns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

World Lung Cancer Day 2021<\/span><\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

World Lung Cancer Day is observed on 1 August each year to raise awareness about the causes and treatment of lung cancer and to highlight the issues that a lack of sufficient research funding can create.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The disease is the second most common form of cancer across the globe and is one of the major causes of death among men and women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The main purpose of the day is to sensitise people about the habits and the factors that can lead to lung cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many people who volunteer with various NGOs and other organisations also try to make people aware of the ways in which they can look out for the early signs of the disease and get treatment in time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

India and China established military hotline in north Sikkim<\/span><\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

India and China established a hotline in Kongra La, north Sikkim, and the People\u2019s Liberation Army (PLA) at Khamba Dzong in the Tibet Autonomous Region to further the spirit of trust and cordial relations along the border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

India and China have two military hotlines in eastern Ladakh, among others at Chushul and Daulat Beg Oldi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These hotlines in various sectors go a long way in maintaining peace and tranquility at the borders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In February 2021, the Foreign Ministers of India and China had agreed to establish a new hotline between the Foreign Ministries to ensure \u201ctimely communication\u201d in the backdrop of the Ladakh stand-off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This will be in addition to the long delayed hotline between the Indian Army\u2019s Director General of Military Operations and China\u2019s Western Theatre Command, which is expected to be established soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deepak Das took charge as new Controller General of Accounts<\/span><\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Deepak Das recently took charge as the new Controller General of Accounts (CGA). He is the 25th officer to hold the position of CGA. The Parent agency of CAG is Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Controller General of Accounts is the Principal Accounting Adviser to Government of India and is responsible for establishing and maintaining a technically sound Management Accounting System.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Office of CGA prepares monthly and annual analysis of expenditure, revenues, borrowings and various fiscal indicators for the Union Government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under Article 150 of the Constitution, the Annual Appropriation Accounts (Civil) and Union Finance Accounts are submitted to Parliament on the advice of Comptroller and Auditor General of India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Along with these documents, an M.I.S Report titled ‘Accounts at a Glance\u2019 is prepared and circulated to Hon\u2019ble Members of Parliament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is also responsible for coordination and monitoring the progress of submission of corrective\/remedial action taken notes (ATNs) on the recommendations contained in Public Accounts Committee\u2019s (PAC) reports as well as the Comptroller & Auditor General (CAG) reports through its web based Audit Para Monitoring System (APMS).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mirabai Chanu won silver medal at Tokyo Olympics 2020<\/span><\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu won a silver medal in the women’s 49 kg weightlifting competition to open India’s counter at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She became the first Indian weightlifter to win silver at the Olympics and the second Indian weightlifter after Karnam Malleswari to win an Olympic medal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saikhom Mirabai Chanu (born 8 August 1994) is an Indian weightlifter from She won the silver medal at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Women’s 49 kg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chanu had won the silver medal in the women’s 48 kg weight class at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, Glasgow; she went on to break the games record en route to the gold medal at the 2018 edition of the event held in Gold Coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2017, she won the gold medal at World Weightlifting Championships held in Anaheim, California. She was awarded the Padma Shri and Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award in 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amit Shah laid foundation stone of Uttar Pradesh State Institute of Forensic Sciences<\/span><\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah recently laid the foundation stone of Uttar Pradesh State Institute of Forensic Sciences in Lucknow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The institute, which would operate under the ministry of home affairs, is proposed to be affiliated to Gujarat-based National Forensics Sciences University (NFSU).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The forensic sciences institute would be headed by a senior police officer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It would pave the way for research and modernisation of policing in the country. The institute will also work to train scientists working in forensic labs and police personnel by developing professional skills for scientific investigation of cases of complex crimes<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The forensic sciences institute would take in 150 students once it starts operating and provide cutting edge expertise in discourses such as behavioural science, civil and criminal law, police science, criminology and forensics among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A centre for excellence for DNA would come up on a five acre land at the forensic sciences institute\u2019s campus in collaboration with the NFSU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nitin Gadkari instructs to open one side of Kuthiran Tunnel in Kerala<\/span><\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari instructed to open one side of the Kuthiran Tunnel in Kerala.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the first road tunnel in the state and will drastically improve connectivity to Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 1.6 km long tunnel is designed through Peechi- Vazahani wildlife sanctuary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The road will improve connectivity to important ports and towns in North \u2013 South Corridor without endangering wildlife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Goa Assembly passed the Goa Bhumiputra Adhikarini Bill, 2021<\/span><\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Goa Assembly passed the Goa Bhumiputra Adhikarini Bill, 2021. The objective was to enable the \u2018mool Goenkar (original Goan)\u2019 to live with dignity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It recognises anyone living in the state for 30 years or more as a \u2018Bhumiputra (son of the soil)\u2019 and giving such a person the right to own his or her \u2018small dwelling unit\u2019 if ownership was undetermined so far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once recognised as a Bhumiputra, an individual can stake claim to ownership of their house of not more than 250 sq m, built before April 1, 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Bill provides for the constitution of the Bhumiputra Adhikarini \u2014 a committee consisting of the Deputy Collector as its Chairperson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why is the Opposition objecting? This Bill has open the floodgates for the migrant population that has been staying in densely populated areas in Goa and has no legality. This would recognise encroachments by slum-dwellers that are over 30 years old as Bhumiputras.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PV Sindhu becomes India’s first woman double Olympic medallist<\/span><\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

PV Sindhu won Bronze at Tokyo 2020 Olympics and became India’s first woman double Olympic medalist after clinching Bronze at Tokyo 2020 Olympics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pusarla Venkata Sindhu is an Indian professional badminton player from Hyderabad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She is the first Indian to become the Badminton World Champion and only the second individual athlete from India to win two consecutive medals at the Olympic Games. Wrestler Sushil Kumar is the first and only other Indian to win two Olympic medals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

India and UK to conduct clinical trials of \u2018Ashwagandha\u2019<\/span><\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Ministry of Ayush has collaborated with the UK’s London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) to conduct a study on \u2018Ashwagandha\u2019 for promoting recovery from COVID-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Ashwagandha\u2019 (Withania somnifera), commonly known as \u2018Indian winter cherry\u2019, is a traditional Indian herb that boosts energy, reduces stress and makes the immune system stronger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA), an autonomous body under the Ministry of Ayush, and the LSHTM recently signed a MoU to conduct clinical trials of \u2018Ashwagandha\u2019 on 2,000 participants in three U.K. cities \u2014 Leicester, Birmingham and London (Southall and Wembley).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While there have been several studies on \u2018Ashwagandha\u2019 to understand its benefits in various ailments, this is the first time the Ministry of Ayush has collaborated with a foreign institution to investigate its efficacy on COVID-19 patients\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
