These discussions and announcements were made during the 5th BRICS Minister of Environment Meeting held in Sao Paulo, Brazil. This meeting was preceded by two-days meeting of BRICS Joint Working Group on Environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gkseries.com\/blog\/current-affairs-quiz-2019-daily-gk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Daily Current Affairs Quiz 2019<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Highlighting the path breaking work done by India in\nachieving its Nationally Determined Contributions(NDCs) Union Environment\nminister, Shri Prakash Javadekar said that India under the dynamic leadership\nof Prime Minister Narendra Modi is walking the talk on NDC\u2019s. \u201cWe have achieved\nreducing energy intensity by 25% and already 78GW of renewable energy has been\nmade possible, while at the same time forest cover has increased by nearly\n15,000 sqkm and tree cover outside the forest is increasing rapidly\u201d said the\nenvironment minister.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stressing the key role played by BRICS countries Shri\nJavadekar said that BRICS is a very good platform for all five countries for\nco-operation and development. \u201cAll five countries are rising and have many\nexperiences to share and these experiences will definitely help all the economies\nto improve further in our climate action efforts and protecting environment\nwhile ensuring growth at the same time\u201d, added the Environment Minister. In a\ntail of ministerial meetings, the minister iterated that India has set an\nexample in achieving its NDC\u2019s and all countries need to walk the talk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Ministerial Declaration highlighted key initiatives &#8211;\nPartnership on Urban Environmental Sustainability Initiative (PUESI) to share\nknowledge and experience on important issues as waste management, cogeneration,\nreverse logistics, sanitation, urban air quality, urban green areas, BRICS\nEnvironmentally Sound Technology (BEST) Cooperation Platform for innovations,\nknowledge sharing and capacity building, and Clean River of BRICS program for\nimprovement of river ecology and combating marine litter. Environment Ministers\nagreed to establish and strengthen concrete mechanisms of implementation of the\ncooperation initiatives with special focus on action-oriented cooperation. The\nkey themes of urban environmental management, contaminated areas and soil\nremediation, water quality, circular economy in context of sustainable\nconsumption and production, marine litter and biodiversity were agreed to be\nintegrated into BRICS cooperation initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Union Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change,\nShri Prakash Javadekar, applauded the initiatives of BRICS countries and\nreaffirmed India\u2019s support to BRICS cooperation. Environment Minister\nhighlighted key initiatives as Swachh Bharat Mission, Waste Management Rules,\nNationally Determined Contributions under Paris Agreement, National Clean Air\nProgramme, electric mobility, marine litter, urban forestry scheme, development\nof resource efficiency policy among others. These efforts and innovative\nsolutions for improving urban environmental quality were well acknowledged by\nthe BRICS countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With respect to biodiversity, BRICs countries stand\ncommitted to support the development of Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework\nand expect the prospective framework to acknowledge the sustainable use of\nbiodiversity and Access and Benefit Sharing components. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Ministers of BRICS countries urged developed countries\nto fulfill their commitment under the UNFCC and its Kyoto Protocol and Paris\nAgreement to provide means of implementation to developing countries including\nclimate finance, technology development and transfer and capacity building\nsupport. BRICS countries reaffirmed the importance of jointly exploring new\nsources of financing individual, bilateral and multilateral projects, while\nhighlighting access to financial resources as key to tackling environmental\nproblems in the developing world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BRICS countries appreciated the Indian Presidency of the\nfourteenth session of the Conference of Parties of the United Nations\nConvention to Combat Desertification. Shri Javadekar invited the BRICS\nMinisters delegations to join at CoP-14 during 2 &#8211; 13 September, 2019 and\ncontribute to the efforts to combat desertification and land degradation.\n\nBrazil was led by Mr. Ricardo Salles, Minister\nof Environment.
