{"id":5040,"date":"2019-08-20T09:50:50","date_gmt":"2019-08-20T09:50:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gkseries.com\/blog\/?p=5040"},"modified":"2019-08-20T09:50:51","modified_gmt":"2019-08-20T09:50:51","slug":"india-has-a-rightful-claim-to-unsc-membership","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gkseries.com\/blog\/india-has-a-rightful-claim-to-unsc-membership\/","title":{"rendered":"India has a rightful claim to UNSC membership"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Vice President said that India, which represents one sixth of the global population, has a rightful claim to the permanent membership of the United Nation\u2019s Security Council (UNSC) and thanked the Lithuanian Prime Minister for extending support to India in various multilateral fora.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gkseries.com\/blog\/current-affairs-quiz-2019-daily-gk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Daily Current Affairs Quiz 2019<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the third day of his tri-nation Baltic tour, the Vice\nPresident met with the Prime Minister of Lithuania, Mr. Saulius Skvernelis, the\nSpeaker of the Seimas (Parliament) of the Republic of Lithuania, Mr. Viktoras\nPranckietis and addressed the India-Lithuania business forum before emplaning\nfor Riga, Latvia where he addressed the Indian community in the evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During his interaction with the Prime Minister Mr. Saulius Skvernelis, the Vice President stressed the need for enlarging and democratizing the UNSC. He sought Lithuania\u2019s support for India\u2019s claim for permanent membership of the Security Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Observing that terror has become a big global menace and is\nthe enemy of mankind,Shri. Naidu called for early adoption of the Comprehensive\nConvention on International Terrorism (CCIT) by the UN, which was mooted by\nIndia in the UN in 1996.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Vice President said that the cooperation between the\nparliamentarians of the two nations should be enhanced for promoting peace,\nprosperity and well being of the people of the two countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stating that both the countries enjoyed close cultural ties,\nhe appreciated Lithuanian Universities for promoting Indology studies and also\nexpressed his happiness over the publication of Comparative Dictionary of 108\nCommon Lithuanian and Sanskrit words and \u2018History of Lithuania\u2019 in Hindi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier, addressing India-Lithuania Business Forum the Vice\nPresident urged Lithuanian businessmen to tap the immense opportunities in\nIndia, which has a rising middle class market comparable to the European Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>HE said that India was the 6th largest economy in the world\nand evolving into a US $ 5 trillion economy by the year 2024-25. \u201cTo achieve\nthis end, India requires approximately US $ 292 billion in new investments\nevery year\u201d\u201d, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Referring to the huge demographic advantage offered by India\nwith youth under 35 years comprising about 60% of its 1.3 billion population,\nhe said that India has undertaken an ambitious plan to build next-generation\ninfrastructure, including 100 Smart Cities, airports, high-speed trains,\nhighways, and cyber connectivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shri Naidu also referred to rapid growth in construction of\nnational highways and the ambitious plans to develop more than a 100 rivers as\nnational waterways and added: \u201cThese programs will vastly improve connectivity,\nand prove as catalysts for industrialization and to take our trade and\ninvestment to a new level\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shri Naidu also told them that India was also focusing on\nrenewable sources to generate energy and planning to achieve 40 per cent of its\nenergy from non-fossil sources by 2030 and increase its renewable energy\ncapacity to 175 GW by 2022. Given Lithuania&#8217;s technological competence in solar\nstorage cells, we could seek appropriate transfer of technologies from you, he\nadded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Praising Lithuania for achieving an enviable 14th rank in\nthe World Bank&#8217;s &#8216;Ease of doing business&#8221;, Shri Naidu mentioned that IT\n&amp; ITES, Pharmaceuticals and Agro-food Processing among the areas in which\nthe two nations could collaborate. Since Lithuania has strengths in dairy and\ncheese production and such technologies would be appreciated in India&#8217;s mega\nfood parks, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Later, addressing the Indian community in Riga, the capital\nof, the Vice President said that Latvia and India enjoy friendly and cordial\nrelations which have been growing steadily in diverse spheres since the\nestablishment of our diplomatic relations in 1991. \u201cIndia is committed to\nstrengthening its relations with Latvia in all spheres, including business and\ninvestment, cultural and academic cooperation and people to people-to-people\nconnect\u201d, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Vice President said that India was proud of the\ncontributions made by its 30 million-strong Diaspora all over the world. \u201cYou\nhave been helpful in bringing foreign investments, technology, expertise and\ngoodwill to India\u201d, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Outlining the rapid strides India is making in various\nsectors, he asked the diaspora to contribute to the growing aspirations of\ntheir motherland. He also commended the Indian community and students, for\ncarving out a niche for themselves in Latvia. \u201cA lot of credit behind your\nhappy and successful stay in the country must also go to the warm-hearted and\ngenerous Latvians\u201d, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Observing that there was a new dynamism in our diaspora\npolicy and outreach,Shri. Naidu said that our Embassies were available round\nthe clock to our people in need.
