Surgical oncologists help to both diagnose cancer and cure\nit through surgery. Whether they perform a needle biopsy to take a sample or\nperform surgery to remove all or parts of the cancerous tissue, they work with\na team of experts to provide you with the best possible care available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While they also treat cancer, they strive to learn more and\nbetter understand the variety of cancers we are faced with daily. As experts in\ntheir field, they continuously seek improvements in care for their patients.\nFrom cutting edge techniques to the latest in research and therapies, surgical\noncologists push toward a cure every day. Their dedication and leadership in\nthe field of oncology make a difference in the lives of cancer patients today\nand tomorrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In March of 2019, Jenni Cherlin & the Lean On Me Breast\nCancer Network founded National Surgical Oncologist Day to recognize the hard\nwork and dedication of surgical oncologists everywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About Dr. Dwight Carlton\nDe Risi<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

August 22nd was chosen to honor Dr. Dwight Carlton De Risi,\na world-renowned surgical oncologist with over 30 years of experience in his\nfield. Dr. De Risi was born on August 22, 1947. He is the first trained\nsurgical oncologist on Long Island specializing in diseases of the breast.\nAfter growing up on Long Island, he attended Seton Hall University and received\nhis doctorate from Georgetown University School of Medicine. Dr. De Risi\ncompleted his residency at North Shore University Hospital and received his\ngraduate surgical oncology fellowship degree from Roswell Park Cancer Institute\nin Buffalo, NY \u2013 America\u2019s first cancer institute and the first in the United\nStates to be accredited by the Society of Surgical Oncology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Having treated tens of thousands of patients over the years,\nDr. De Risi remained a leader in his field, introducing and popularizing\ncutting edge surgical and diagnostic techniques, which have now become\nstandards of care. He has been recognized and honored for his accomplishments\nby several organizations including Seton Hall Pre Medical Honor Society Alpha\nEpsilon Delta. Dr. De Risi is known in the community for his compassion and\nlate office hours. His success is attributed to his family (which includes his\nwife Donna, and his four children Darren, Drew, Dara, and Deirdre), his\nincredible office staff, and the love and support from his dedicated patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through the efforts of his loyal supporters, Dr. De Risi\ncreated the non-profit support group in May of 2000 called Lean On Me Breast\nCancer Networks Inc. Since its inception, over seventy volunteers have helped\nguide and comfort several thousand newly diagnosed breast cancer patients\nthrough their journey from diagnosis and treatment to wellness. In addition,\nseveral exciting and enjoyable fundraising events are planned throughout the\nyear, helping patients realize the importance of living each day to its\nfullest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
