Delivering the keynote address at a Curtain Raiser Press Conference in New Delhi, Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Shri Prakash Javadekar, highlighted India\u2019s resolve to combat desertification. \u201cDesertification is a worldwide problem directly affecting 250 million people and a third of the earth\u2019s land surface. To fight this menace, India will convert degraded land of nearly 50 lakh hectares to fertile land in next 10 years; it will implement provisions of New Delhi Declaration which is to be adopted at the end of conference and a Centre for Excellence will be established at Dehradun\u201d, said Shri Javadekar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gkseries.com\/blog\/current-affairs-quiz-2019-daily-gk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Daily Current Affairs Quiz 2019<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Environment\nMinister also expressed India\u2019s continued commitment to stay on track on a\nsustainable path to land use and land management. \u201cIt is our collective\nresponsibility to do our duty towards protecting the environment and ensuring\nthat there is no harmful impact on it\u201d, said Shri Javadekar. Elaborating\nfurther on India\u2019s key role as the President of UNCCD COP for the next 2 years,\nShri Javadekar said \u201cIt is the common resolve of the World to combat\ndesertification and India will lead from the front and move the world in a\npositive direction, taking into cognizance the support of other countries\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Delegates from 196\ncountries comprising of scientists and representatives of national and local\ngovernments, global business leaders, NGOs, gender-based organisations, youth\ngroups, journalists, and faith and community groups will present and share\ntheir expertise and give an overview to achieve their goals at the 12-day\nConference .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Convention\nentered into force in December 1996. It is one of the three Rio Conventions\nalong with United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and\nConvention on Biological Diversity (CBD). India became a signatory to UNCCD on\n14th October 1994 and ratified it on 17th December 1996. The main objective of\nthe convention is to combat desertification and mitigate the effects of drought\nin countries experiencing serious drought and\/or desertification, involving\nlong-term integrated strategies that focus simultaneously, in affected areas,\non improved productivity of land, and the rehabilitation, conservation and\nsustainable management of land and water resources, leading to improved<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>living conditions,\nin particular at the community level. The Convention\u2019s 197 parties work\ntogether to improve the living conditions for people in drylands, to maintain\nand restore land and soil productivity, and to mitigate the effects of drought.\nThe UNCCD is particularly committed to a bottom-up approach, encouraging the\nparticipation of local people in combating desertification and land\ndegradation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>India will be hosting the 14th Conference of Parties (COP14) to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) from 2-13 September 2019 at India Expo Centre &amp; Mart, Greater Noida.
