Daily Current Affairs Quiz 2019<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nExpressing his thoughts on the MoU, T G Sitharam, Director,\nIIT Guwahati, said, \u201cDrinking water contamination is a major problem in most of\nthe states including Assam. This \u201cchemical free\u201d treatment technique might be\nuseful to the citizens in rural and urban areas as well. I appreciate the\ninitiative made by the team from IIT Guwahati that has resulted in one of the\nsuccessful incubation of a company within IIT Guwahati (RD Grow Green India Pvt\nLtd) who have taken the challenge to supply contaminant-free drinking water in\nthe Assam state presently using the technology developed by Prof M K Purkait.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The technology is based on the \u2018Apparatus and Method for\nRemoval of Fluoride, Iron, Arsenic and Microorganisms from Contaminated\nDrinking Water\u2019 by Prof Mihir Kumar Purkait, Department of Chemical\nEngineering, IIT Guwahati. The technology is patented by Prof Purkait under the\nIndian patent Number: 286481.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Explaining the technology, Prof Purkait, said, \u201cIn\nelectrocoagulation process, an applied potential generates the coagulant\nspecies in situ as the sacri\ufb01cial metal anode (aluminium or iron) dissolves,\nwhile hydrogen is simultaneously evolved at the cathode. Coagulant species\naggregate the suspended particles or precipitate and adsorb dissolved\ncontaminants. Tiny bubbles of hydrogen and oxygen that are formed during\nelectrolysis of water, collide with air bubbles which compel to \ufb02oat the\npollutant particles. Choice of electrode material depends on various criteria\nsuch as low-cost, low-oxidation potential, inertness towards the system under\nconsideration. Aluminium has been seen to be very effective and successful in\niron, arsenic and fluoride removal at favorable operating conditions. The\ntechnology is equally effective for the treatment of industrial effluent\nincluding oily wastewater.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
RD Grow Green India is an incubating company at the\nTechnology Incubation Centre in IIT Guwahati and is working for this project\nfor the treatment of contaminated drinking water and industrial effluent as\nwell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Talking on the MoU, Rajeev Saikia, said, \u201cThe Company is\ncapable of handling Arsenic, Iron and Fluoride contamination of Assam in\ncollaboration with the state government in appropriate manner.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
