Daily Current Affairs Quiz 2019<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nThe Vice President of India, Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu has said\nthat environmentally friendly aquaculture can serve as a vehicle for rural\ndevelopment, food and nutritional security for the rural masses, considering\nthe substantial contribution aquaculture makes towards socio-economic\ndevelopment in terms of income and employment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Endorsing the call given by the Prime Minister, Shri\nNarendra Modi for Fit India, the Vice President said that it is the need of the\nhour and has to become a national movement. Intake of food rich in proteins,\nsuch as fish, is crucial for good health, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Referring to the slogan given by the former Prime Minister,\nShri Atal Behari Vajpayee, ‘Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan and Jai Vigyan’, Shri Naidu\nsaid that we must salute the Soldiers for guarding our borders, we must salute\nthe farmer for producing food for us and we must salute the Scientists for\nmaking India scientifically advanced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Highlighting the government\u2019s resolve to double farmers\u2019\nincome by 2022, the Vice President underscored the necessity of ensuring that\nthe economic benefits from fisheries reach the primary producers, the fishermen\nand fish farmers. \u2018We must reduce the role of middlemen, provide crop\ninsurances, enhance access to credit, develop cold chains and good upcountry\nmarket linkages, provide infrastructure for post-harvest storage, handling and\nvalue addition\u2019, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cautioning that reckless exploitation of limited resources,\nespecially endangered marine species must be strictly prevented, the Vice\nPresident stressed that the promotion, regulation and monitoring of responsible\nfishing practices, through robust fisheries management and governance\nframeworks are essential for the sustainability of fisheries resources in both\ncoastal areas and high seas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Vice President said that the burning concerns of marine\nand fresh water pollution caused by discarded plastics and harmful chemicals must\nbe addressed on priority basis. Referring to the looming threats of global\nwarming and climate change, he called for a coordinated response to tackle\nthese issues. \u2018Sustainability and conservation must be the twin pillars on\nwhich we build our fisheries sector\u2019, he exhorted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Speaking of India\u2019s enormous potential in the fisheries\nsector, the Vice President stated that India is the second largest fish\nproducer in the world with a production of 13.70 Million Metric Tons of fish\nduring 2018-19. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Reasoning that the rising world population is putting\nfurther pressure on the available food resources, the Vice President said that\nthere was an urgent need to boost fish production to ensure food security to\nour billion-strong population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Shri Naidu said that with a long coastline of over 8000 Kms\nand exploitable fisheries resources of 3.9 million Metric Tons, India is\nblessed with vast aquatic resources with a rich diversity of fish fauna for\nsustainable utilization. He added that India\u2019s vast and diverse aquatic\nresources offered an excellent opportunity for expansion of aquaculture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Vice President also pointed out that globally,\naquaculture is being looked upon as the best alternative to boost fish\nproduction, as the production from the traditional and marine fisheries have\nbeen stagnating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Expressing concern that India exploits only a fraction of\nthe aquaculture potential that is available to it, he said that there is room\nfor both horizontal and vertical expansion in the fisheries sector. He also spoke\nabout the immense potential India has in the field of mariculture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Referring to the need for diversifying aquaculture, Shri\nNaidu said that cage culture in floating or fixed cages and pen culture would\nhelp us meet this objective. The Vice President suggested that our future\noutlook must focus not on increasing our fishing efforts in the seas, but on\njudicious use of the declining fishery resources by reducing losses and\nfocusing on value addition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Stating that fisheries and aquaculture are multidisciplinary\nsubjects where scientists and technologists have to work as teams, Shri. Naidu\nsaid that initiatives like Aqua Aquaria must not only serve as platforms for\nsharing knowledge and information on new technologies but also strive to take\nthis knowledge to the common people, fish farmers and primary producers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Referring to the role played by modern technology in\nenhancing production and productivity, the Vice President said that greater\nR&D support with strong linkages between research and development agencies\nwas the need of the hour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He congratulated MPEDA for organizing the 3-day exposition\nand expressed hope that such events would help giving a renewed impetus to the\nsector by infusing new ideas and advanced technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Vice President inaugurated the MPEDA-RGCA Exhibition and\nthe Business to Business Exhibition and went around the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Minister for Animal Husbandry, Fisheries and Marketing,\nAndhra Pradesh, Shri Mopidevi Venkata Ramana Rao, the Minister for Animal\nHusbandry and Fisheries, Telangana, Shri T.
