{"id":5759,"date":"2019-09-02T08:54:45","date_gmt":"2019-09-02T08:54:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gkseries.com\/blog\/?p=5759"},"modified":"2019-09-02T08:54:46","modified_gmt":"2019-09-02T08:54:46","slug":"assam-to-move-supreme-court-for-nrc-reverification-in-select-districts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gkseries.com\/blog\/assam-to-move-supreme-court-for-nrc-reverification-in-select-districts\/","title":{"rendered":"Assam to move Supreme Court for NRC reverification in select districts"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The government of Assam and the ruling BJP in the State have termed the finalisation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) list there as a \u201cmixed bag\u201d with concerns being raised over several \u201ctechnical flaws\u201d in the process that may have caused exclusion of Bengali Hindu refugees who had crossed over to Assam before 1971.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gkseries.com\/blog\/current-affairs-quiz-2019-daily-gk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Daily Current Affairs Quiz 2019<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the State\ngovernment would approach the Supreme Court again for a reverification process,\non a pilot basis, in a couple of districts to try and address the anomalies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe NRC authority has registered many cases where documents\nwere questionable after which we asked for a reverification of 20% of the cases\nin border districts and 10% in other districts as we found that in border\nareas, where populations were high, deletions were low, whereas in tribal areas\ndeletions were higher in proportion. The Supreme Court denied that request. We\nwill go back again to the SC and ask that at least in two districts, on a pilot\nbasis, reverification should happen,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to him, the outcome saw two kinds of people among\na total of over 19 lakh exclusions: \u201cBengali Hindu refugees who had come over\nbefore 1971 and others who had issues with their documentation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said there were \u201ctechnical flaws in the NRC exercise as\nmany NRC officials did not recognise refugee certification issued before 1971,\nas a result of which many Bengali Hindus remained outside the list.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said he was also concerned with the over 3 lakh people\nwho did not appeal against their exclusion when the draft NRC had come out\nearlier. \u201cThere are lakhs who did not reapply. Unless you update the NRC\nnationally, we will not know the net result of illegal immigrants across the\ncountry,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe NRC is one place, but our border police have the right\nto pursue enquiries against those with questionable documents and citizenship,\nfor the detection of illegal foreigners, and that will continue,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the question of the Citizenship Amendment Bill, which had\nbeen moved in the last Parliament but couldn\u2019t be passed, Mr. Sarma said those\nwho would be covered under that law were \u201cnot a significant number\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The NRC exercise had been undertaken under the supervision\nof the Supreme Court, and the final NRC list, out on Saturday, will be followed\nby a 120-day appeal window for those who want to dispute their exclusion from\nthe list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>About NRC:<\/strong> The\nNational Register of Citizens (NRC) is a register maintained by the Government\nof India containing names &amp; certain relevant information for identification\nof all genuine Indian citizens.
