This was stated by Dr Harsh Vardhan, Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare at the inauguration of the \u201872nd Session of the WHO Regional Committee for South-East Asia,&#8217; here today.\u201d Dr Harsh Vardhan further stated that under the visionary Prime Minister, India is on the brink of a healthcare sector revolution and is moving with urgency to change the health landscape of India. \u201cThe Prime Minister has spelt out his commitment, in no uncertain terms, that the health of our citizens is his government\u2019s topmost priority. The charismatic Prime Minister has fast-tracked many policy initiatives aimed at achieving all the core tenets of Universal Health Coverage to deliver affordable and inclusive healthcare for all,\u201d Dr Harsh Vardhan elaborated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gkseries.com\/blog\/current-affairs-quiz-2019-daily-gk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Daily Current Affairs Quiz 2019<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Harsh Vardhan was also unanimously elected as Chair of\nthe 72nd Session of the WHO Regional Committee for South-East Asia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eight Ministers of Health from the 11 countries of the WHO\nSouth East Asia Region (SEAR), Smt Preeti Sudan, Secretary (HFW), Dr Poonam\nKhetrapal Singh, Regional Director, WHO South-East Asia Region were also\npresent at the inaugural session. This is the second time that India is hosting\nthe Regional Committee meeting; the previous one was also hosted by India in\nNew Delhi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stressing on the need for right and healthy nutrition, Dr\nHarsh Vardhan stated that the government is observing the entire month of\nSeptember as \u201cPoshan Maah\u201d (Nutrition Month) to sensitize the public towards\nhealthy eating, address the twin issues of malnutrition\/undernutrition and\nproblem of obesity in some sections of the population, and intensifying the\ncampaign towards a \u2018Malnutrition-Free India\u2019. Dr Harsh Vardhan further said\nthat unsafe food and poor diet create a vicious cycle of disease and\nmalnutrition, particularly affecting infants, young children, elderly and sick.\n\u201cIndia is passing through an epidemiological shift from communicable to\nnon-communicable diseases, and the burden of diet-related diseases such as\ndiabetes, hypertension, and obesity is rising rapidly. I am happy to share with\nyou that the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has adopted a \u201cfood\nsystems approach\u201d to ensure our citizens have access to safe and healthy food,\u201d\nhe elaborated. He further said that this approach judiciously combines the\nregulatory and capacity building measures with consumer empowerment\ninitiatives. Citizens are being sensitized through a people\u2019s movement called\n\u2018Eat Right India\u2019. \u201cIt\u2019s tagline, Sahi Bhojan. Behtar Jeevan\u2019 \u2013 \u2018Right diet\nleads to better quality life\u2019 depicts India\u2019s commitment to preventive and\npromotive healthcare as an important pillar of our health policy, he mentioned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI must take this opportunity to thank our Youth Icon, the\ncricket superstar Virat Kohli, who has helped us to launch a massive campaign.\n\u201cEat Right, Stay Fit, Tabhi India Super Fit\u201d, Dr Harsh Vardhan said. He\ninformed that three days ago, Hon\u2019ble Prime Minister launched the &#8216;Fit India&#8217;\nMovement&#8217; coinciding with the National Sports day celebrations. This campaign\naims at encouraging people to include physical activity and sports as a routine\nin their everyday life. This, along with Eat Right India campaign, will help us\nto fight lifestyle diseases like hypertension, obesity and diabetes\neffectively, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reiterating the commitment of the government, the Union\nHealth Minister saidthat Ayushman Bharat is India\u2019s road to Universal Health\nCare. The first component of this is establishing 1,50,000 Health and Wellness\nCentres by the year 2022, which shall provide an entire gamut of preventive\nhealthcare. We have already operationalized more than 20,000 Health &amp;\nWellness Centres. \u201cThe second component, Pradhan Mantri Jan Aarogya Yojana, is\naimed at providing health protection cover to over 100 million poor and\nvulnerable families for secondary and tertiary care including pre- and\npost-hospitalization expenses. Key features include health cover of up to Rs.\nFive hundred thousand per family. A total of 17,000 hospitals have been\nempanelled so far under this scheme. More than 4.1 million persons have become\nbeneficiaries under this scheme and have thus saved a total of an\napproximate120 billion Indian Rupees on health expenditure,\u201d Dr Harsh Vardhan\nmentioned in his inaugural ceremony address.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As another component of preventive healthcare, the Union\nHealth Minister further said that \u201cWe have charted out a plan to increase full\nimmunization coverage to 90% people through intensification of campaigns under\nMission Indradhanush. The range of diseases covered under Universal\nImmunization Program has also been increased with inclusion of Rotavirus,\nPneumococcal and Measles Rubella Vaccines,\u201d he added. Dr Harsh Vardhan further\nsaid that ending vaccine preventable diseases remains an important priority of\nthe government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh, Regional Director, WHO South-East\nAsia Region stated that as governors of health in this region, it also requires\nthat we look beyond our day-to-day concerns and the immediate horizon. She\nstated, \u201cThe flagship priorities have provided targeted focus and been\nresponsible for a series of remarkable achievements. In advancing maternal and\nchild health, tackling measles and rubella, in the battle against NCDs, NTDs,\nTB and AMR, the Region has performed with skill and determination\u201d.
