{"id":5781,"date":"2019-09-03T09:56:44","date_gmt":"2019-09-03T09:56:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gkseries.com\/blog\/?p=5781"},"modified":"2019-09-03T09:56:45","modified_gmt":"2019-09-03T09:56:45","slug":"india-takes-over-cop-presidency-from-china-for-next-two-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gkseries.com\/blog\/india-takes-over-cop-presidency-from-china-for-next-two-years\/","title":{"rendered":"India takes over COP Presidency from China for next two years"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Union Minister for Environment, Forest &amp; Climate Change (MoEF&amp;CC), Shri Prakash Javadekar and Executive Secretary, UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), Mr.Ibrahim Thiaw jointly inaugurated the 12- day 14th Conference of Parties (COP) to UNCCD at India Expo Centre &amp; Mart, Greater Noida. Addressing the Inaugural session of the Conference, the Environment Minister who is also the elected COP President for next two years, expressed India\u2019s resounding commitment to finding a long-term solution for minimizing the impact of desertification and land degradation. \u201cThis year, India being the global host for COP 14 will take over the COP Presidency from China for the next two years till 2021. India is privileged to be among the select few countries to have hosted the COP of all three Rio conventions on climate change, biodiversity and land. Through hosting COP 14, India will highlight its leadership in navigating the land management agenda at global level. It will also provide a stage to mainstream sustainable land management in country\u2019s national development policies\u201d, said Shri Javadekar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gkseries.com\/blog\/current-affairs-quiz-2019-daily-gk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Daily Current Affairs Quiz 2019<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Highlighting the importance of mobilization at the\ngrassroots and strong policies in place, Shri Javadekar stressed on how the\nGovernment is playing a key role in order to find and deliver solutions.\nAcknowledging the importance of holding an International Conference of this\nnature, the Environment Minister said, &#8220;The key outcomes of COP 14 will\nfacilitate in delivering convergence and synergies among the existing\nprogrammes in the field of agriculture, forestry, land, water management and\npoverty alleviation, which will cater the need to achieve the Sustainable\nDevelopment Goals (SDGs) and focused vision of our Hon\u2019ble Prime Minister\u2019s\nagenda of \u201cDoubling the Farmer\u2019s Income by 2022\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With an endeavour to promote green activities The\nEnvironment Minister stated, &#8220;Let us be optimistic. We must have faith in\nour action, I am optimistic about future and confident that if human actions\nhave caused damage, further human action cam also restore the land ecology and\nenvironment&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Thiaw said, \u201cFor the next two\nweeks we are over six thousand tasked with making life better for the 3 and\nhalf billion affected by the degradation of three quarters of our land&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Giving the Host country statement, MoS, MoEF&amp;CC, Shri\nBabul Supriyo said &#8220;India has been proactive in combating land\ndegradation, desertification and drought. We have added more than 15000 Sq km\nof tree cover inside and outside forest areas in last 5 years, which is a big\nsuccess in land restoration&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The opening session of the High Level Segment (HLS) on 9th\nSeptember 2019 will be inaugurated by the Prime Minister of India, Shri\nNarendra Modi who will address the august gathering constituting Deputy\nSecretary General United Nations, Executive Secretary UNCCD, President of the\nCOP, Head of States, Environment Ministers and Heads of delegation from 197\nCountry Parties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There will be many side-events and exhibitions to\ndemonstrate country\u2019s present and upcoming effort to combat desertification and\ndrought and to achieve land degradation neutrality from all over the world.\nIndia Pavilion is also launched for showcasing the success stories and\nachievements of India depicting the nexus between land, water, energy,\nbiodiversity, climate change, science and technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Conference is being attended by delegates from 197\nparties comprising of scientists and representatives of national and local\ngovernments, global business leaders, NGOs, gender-based organisations, youth\ngroups, journalists, and faith and community groups, who will present and share\ntheir expertise and give an overview to achieve their goals at the Conference,\nbeginning from today to 13th September 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD)\nwas adopted in Paris on 17 June 1994 and ratified by 196 countries &amp; European\nUnion. India ratified the UNCCD Convention on 17th December 1996. This\nconvention can be called as \u201cMother convention\u201d of the other two Rio\nConventions that emerged as a major outcome of the 1992 Rio Earth Summit viz.\nUnited Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and Convention\non Biological Diversity (CBD).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The objective of the COP 14, accompanied with fourteenth\nmeeting of Committee on Science and Technology (CST 14) and eighteenth meeting\nof Committee to Review the Implementation of the Convention (CRIC 18), is to\ndiscuss on various issues of land such as sustainable land management,\nreversing land degradation, mitigating drought, halting desertification,\naddressing sand and dust storms, linkages with gender, tenure, etc. and guide\nthe Convention as global and national circumstances needs change.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Union Minister for Environment, Forest &amp; Climate Change (MoEF&amp;CC), Shri Prakash Javadekar and Executive Secretary, UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), Mr.Ibrahim Thiaw jointly inaugurated the 12- day 14th Conference of Parties (COP) to UNCCD at India Expo Centre &amp; Mart, Greater Noida.
