Daily Current Affairs Quiz 2019<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nThe signatories to the loan agreement for the Maharashtra\nRural Connectivity Improvement Project were Mr. Sameer Kumar Khare, Additional\nSecretary (Fund Bank and ADB), Department of Economic Affairs in the Ministry\nof Finance, on behalf of the Government of India, and Mr. Sabyasachi Mitra,\nDeputy Country Director of ADB\u2019s India Resident Mission, who signed for ADB.\nThe project agreement was signed by Mr. Walter D\u2019mello, Under Secretary,\nFinance Department and Mr. Pravin Kide, Secretary, Mukhya Mantri Gram Sadak\nYojana and chief executive officer (CEO), Maharashtra Rural Road Development\nAssociation (MRRDA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cImproving rural connectivity is one of the key priorities\nof the Government of India, which will help enhance rural livelihoods and\nalleviate poverty among remote rural communities in project districts,\u201d said\nMr. Khare after signing the loan agreement. \u201cEnhanced road connectivity and\nbetter access to markets will help the farmers increase agricultural\nproductivity and incomes,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe project will improve the condition of about 2,100\nkilometers (km) of rural roads to all-weather standards, with climate\nresilience and safety features, connecting rural communities with productive\nagricultural areas and socioeconomic centers,\u201d said Mr. Mitra. \u201cProvision of\ncontractual maintenance for 5 years following construction has also been\nprovided under the project,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Maharashtra has an extensive road network, with rural roads\nmaking up two thirds of the network. But more than half of these rural roads\nare unsealed, making them unsuitable for motorized traffic and impassable\nduring the rainy season. Road safety has been a growing concern with the state\naccounting for over 8% of all fatal road accidents in India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Accompanying the loan is a technical assistance grant of $1\nmillion for institutional strengthening of the MRRDA in areas such as road\nasset management, road safety, climate-resilient design and construction and\nweb-based real-time project monitoring. Outreach for road users will be carried\nout in the state to build awareness of road safety, gender issues including\nhuman trafficking, and enhancing women\u2019s road construction and maintenance\nskills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
