Daily Current Affairs Quiz 2019<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nThe UN Committee on CRPD in its 22nd Session took up India\u2019s\nFirst Country Report for consideration during 2nd & 3rd September 2019 at\nUNHRC, Geneva. An Indian delegation headed by Mrs. Shakuntala D. Gamlin,\nSecretary, DEPwD deposed before the UN Committee during the process of\nconsideration of the report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Secretary, DEPwD highlighted various initiatives taken by\nthe Government in the recent past for inclusion and empowerment of PwDs in line\nwith the obligations under UNCRPD. She specifically drew attention of the UN\nCommittee on enactment of the Comprehensive RPwD Act, 2016, launch of\nAccessible India Campaign, establishment of National Institute of Mental Health\nRehabilitation (NIMHR) to address issues concerning psycho-social disability,\nestablishment of Centre for Disability Sports, achievements in distribution of\naids and assistive devices, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The UN Committee while appreciating the provisions of the\nRPwD Act, 2016 and various initiatives of the Government of India raised\nqueries relating to implementation of the provisions of the Act, measures\ntaken\/being taken by the Government to improve data, prohibit discrimination,\nespecially amongst ethnic\/religious minority groups, rehabilitation of internal\ndisplaced groups, protection from exploitation, protection of reproductive\nrights etc. The issues with regard to legal capacity of PwDs and the redressal\nmechanism for any violations under RPwD Act, 2016 were also discussed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Indian delegation replied to the queries raised by the\nUN Committee based on the constitutional provisions, provisions under the RPwD\nAct, other relevant laws and the affirmative actions so far taken in this\nregard. With reference to a query relating to J&K, the Secretary, DEPwD\ncategorically stated that J&K is an integral part of India and the\nGovernment has taken adequate steps to make available medical facilities to all\nits citizens of J&K. She also highlighted the steps taken by the Government\nto protect the reproductive rights of all its citizens including women with\ndisabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The UN Committee welcomed the efforts of the Government of\nIndia and noted the response of the Indian delegation. The Committee will come\nup with its final recommendations on the report shortly.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
