{"id":5898,"date":"2019-09-10T10:09:18","date_gmt":"2019-09-10T10:09:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gkseries.com\/blog\/?p=5898"},"modified":"2020-09-01T18:50:44","modified_gmt":"2020-09-01T18:50:44","slug":"india-will-restore-26-million-hectares-of-degraded-land-by-2030","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gkseries.com\/blog\/india-will-restore-26-million-hectares-of-degraded-land-by-2030\/","title":{"rendered":"India Will Restore 26 Million Hectares of Degraded Land by 2030"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated the High-Level Segment Meeting of the 14th Conference of Parties (COP14) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), at Expo Mart, Greater Noida in august presence of Mr.Ralph Gonsalves, Prime Minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines; Ms. Amina Jane Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General United Nations; Mr. Ibrahim Thiaw, Executive Secretary, UNCCD; Shri Prakash Javadekar, Union Minister for Environment, Forest &amp; Climate Change (MoEF&amp;CC); Shri Babul Supriyo, MoS, MoEF&amp;CC and other dignitaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gkseries.com\/blog\/current-affairs-quiz-2019-daily-gk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Daily Current Affairs Quiz 2019<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking on the occasion, the Prime Minister reaffirmed\nIndia\u2019s commitment to addressing all the three main concerns of the Rio\nConventions. He also stated that India has hosted global gatherings through the\nCoP\u2019s for all the three Conventions. \u201cGoing forward, India would be happy to\npropose initiatives for greater South-South cooperation in addressing issues of\nclimate change, biodiversity and land degradation\u201d, said the Prime Minister.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During his address, the Prime Minister announced \u201cIndia\nwould raise its ambition of the total area that would be restored from its land\ndegradation status, from twenty-one million hectares to twenty-six million\nhectares between now and 2030\u201d. This will be focused on restoring land\nproductivity and ecosystem services of 26 million hectares of most degraded and\nvulnerable land, with emphasis on the degraded agricultural, forest and other\nwastelands by adopting a landscape restoration approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shri Narendra Modi also announced India\u2019s proposal to setup\na global technical support institute for the member countries of the UNCCD for\ntheir capacity building and support regarding the Land Degradation Neutrality\nTarget Setting Program. \u201cI am happy to state that India would be happy to help\nother friendly countries develop land restoration strategies through cost\neffective satellite and space technology\u201d, said the Prime Minister.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Acknowledging the importance of the role of water, Shri\nNarendra Modi called upon the leadership of UNCCD to conceive a global water\naction agenda which is central to the Land Degradation Neutrality strategy.\n\u201cWhen we address degraded lands, we also address water scarcity. Augmenting\nwater supply, enhancing water recharge, slowing down water run-off and\nretaining moisture in the soil are all parts of a holistic land and water\nstrategy\u201d, said the Prime Minister. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Prime Minister also advocated on the need to eradicate\nthe menace of single use plastic, he stated \u201cMy Government has announced that\nIndia will put an end to single use plastic in the coming years. I believe the\ntime has come for even the world to say good-bye to single use plastic\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shri Prakash Javadekar in his opening remarks lauded the\nPrime Minister\u2019s efforts towards green activities, \u201cPrime Minister played a\nleading role in Paris Summit; he has been the guiding force behind India&#8217;s\nambitious program of achieving 175 GW of renewable energy production\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Environment Minister pointed out that the COP14 has\nemerged as a global platform to discuss matters of great importance concerning\nthe environment, he stated \u201cMore than 190 Countries, 100 Ministers and 8000\nparticipants from all across the globe came together to discuss and work on\npromotion of land restoration and climate resilience at UNCCD COP14\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Prime Minister of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Mr\nRalph Gonsalves also spoke at length on climate change and desertification. He\nalso acknowledged the Prime Minister for his concerted efforts in addressing\nthese issues. \u201cWe all should stand united to resolve the Climate Change issue\nand make UNCCD COP14 path breaking. I acknowledge the role of Government of\nIndia &amp; initiatives of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi for environment\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Noting the five summits to be held in New York soon, Ibrahim\nThiaw, UNCCD Executive Secretary, said \u201cthe agreements we reach here about how\nto restore, protect and manage our land on a massive scale and how to trigger a\nseismic shift in private sector partnerships to make it happen can immediately\nhelp ramp up the ambition of action plans for everyone involved\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the past week, various deliberations were conducted on\nrestoration of degraded land, the Environment Minister in a Press Conference\nlater today also announced that the Delhi declaration will be announced\ntomorrow which will be accountable for the actions by various countries, \u201cThe\ndraft Delhi declaration is almost ready, discussions throughout last week was\nvery productive;
