Union Cabinet to celebrate the 550th Birth Anniversary of Shri Guru Nanak Devji throughout the country and across the globe, Ministry of External Affairs is commemorating the Anniversary in a grand and befitting manner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gkseries.com\/blog\/current-affairs-quiz-2019-daily-gk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Daily Current Affairs Quiz 2019<\/a><\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UNESCO is partnering in translations of Nanak&#8217;s teachings in\nmany International languages for wider dissemination and outreach. As part of\nthe celebrations, Missions will be unveiling the special commemorative stamps\nissued by Department of Posts and also presenting the same to foreign\ndignitaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Guru Nanak Dev Jayanti is observed to celebrate the birth of\n<strong>Guru Nanak Dev (1469-1539),<\/strong> who\nis <strong>first&nbsp;of the 10 Sikh Gurus<\/strong>\nand the <strong>founder of Sikhism.<\/strong> He\nadvocated the <strong>&#8216;Nirguna&#8217; (devotion to and\nworship of formless divine)<\/strong> form of bhakti. He rejected\nsacrifices, ritual baths, image worship, austerities and the scriptures of both\nHindus and Muslims. He organised his followers into a community. He <strong>set up rules for congregational worship\n(Sangat)<\/strong> involving collective recitation. The <strong>fifth preceptor, Guru Arjan Dev,<\/strong>\ncompiled<strong>&nbsp;Guru Nanak Dev\u2019s hymns along with those\nof his four successors<\/strong> and other religious poets like <strong>Baba Farid, Ravidas<\/strong> (also known\nas <strong>Raidas<\/strong>) and <strong>Kabir<\/strong> in the <strong>Adi Granth Sahib.<\/strong> These <strong>hymns, called &#8216;Gurbani&#8217;,<\/strong> are\ncomposed in many languages. In the late seventeenth century the <strong>tenth preceptor, Guru Gobind Singh, included<\/strong>\nthe <strong>compositions of the ninth guru, Guru Tegh\nBahadur,<\/strong> and this scripture was called the<strong> Guru Granth Sahib.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The first guru of the Sikhs, Guru Nanak Dev ji is observed on on Karthik Poornima\u00a0 every year.
