World Bank Report States Extreme Poverty in India Decline by 12.3% between 2011-2019<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Extreme poverty has gone down by 12.3 percentage points between 2011-2019, a rate significantly lower than that of the 2004-2011 period. Poverty headcount rate dropped from 22.5 per cent in 2011 to 10.2 per cent in 2019 with more pronounced deductions in rural areas compared to urban areas, according to a recent World Bank working paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The decline in rural areas was much higher than in urban areas. While the reduction in rural poverty dropped by 14.7 percentage points, the poverty in urban areas dropped by 7.9 percentage points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The paper titled \u2018Poverty has Declined over the last decade But Not As Much As Previously Thought\u2019 was jointly authored by economists Sutirtha Sinha Roy and Roy van der Weide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

India Elected to Four UN ECOSOC Bodies<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

India has been elected to four key United Nations Economic and Social Council (UN-ECOSOC) Bodies in April 2022. To the Committee for Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, Ambassador Preeti Saran has been re-elected. In 2018, she was first elected to the Asia Pacific seat on the UN\u2019s Committee on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights. On 1st January 2019, her first four-year term began.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These bodies include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  2. Committee on NGOs,<\/strong><\/li>
  3. Commission on Science & Technology for Development<\/strong><\/li>

    Apart from this, India has contributed\u00a0US$ 200,000<\/strong>\u00a0to UN Investigative Team to Promote Accountability for Crimes by Da\u2019esh\/ ISIL (UNITAD). The contribution will be used to support the two areas of\u00a0UNITAD\u2019s investigations, which are: Development and use of chemical and biological weapons by ISIL and ISIL crimes against cultural heritage in Iraq.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    BRO to construct world\u2019s highest tunnel at Shinku La Pass connecting Himachal Pradesh to Ladakh<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    The Border Roads Organisation will construct the world\u2019s highest tunnel at Shinku La Pass at 16,580 feet to connect Himachal Pradesh to Ladakh, BRO Director General Lieutenant General Rajeev Chaudhary said here on Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    BRO will execute this ambitious project under\u00a0\u2018Project Yojak\u2019.<\/strong>\u00a0This tunnel is proposed to be completed by 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Lt Gen Manoj Pande named as India\u2019s next Chief of Army Staff<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    Lt Gen Manoj Pande is the first-ever officer from the Corps of Engineer to be appointed as Army Chief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi steps down as President of Yemen<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    Yemeni President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi stepped down under pressure from Saudi Arabia and is now under de-facto house arrest, The Wall Street Journal reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Hadi has also handed over his power to the newly created presidential council, which consists of eight political leaders led by Rashad al-Alimi. He had served as the president of Yemen from 2012 until 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
