Kumudini Lakhia (1930–2024), the trailblazing Kathak exponent, revolutionized the classical form by challenging its reliance on narrative (katha) and literary content (sahitya), introducing abstraction, ensemble choreography, and contemporary themes.
Trained under legends like Pt Sundar Prasad, Pt Shambhu Maharaj, and Pt Birju Maharaj, she brought a global perspective after touring Europe with Ram Gopal at 18.
As founder of Kadamb Centre for Dance in Ahmedabad, she nurtured generations with her innovative yet tradition-rooted vision, reshaping Kathak through fearless experimentation.
