Vasudev Than Narowa Satra — Reviving a Medieval Vaishnavite Centre

Phase-I development work of the historic Vasudev Than Narowa Satra has commenced with an estimated budget of ₹12.68 crore. Situated in Dhakuakhana in Assam’s Lakhimpur district, the Satra dates back to the 14th century and was initially linked to the Chutia king Satyanarayan.

In the 17th century, the Vaishnavite saint Damodar Ata formally founded it as Laumura Satra. The land for the Satra was originally granted by Ahom king Jayadhaj Singha. However, due to repeated transfers of ownership over time, it came to be known as “Narowa,” meaning land that changed hands. The current development initiative seeks to revive and preserve its spiritual, historical, and cultural importance as a prominent centre of Assam’s Satra tradition.
