Burachapori Wildlife Sanctuary - Assam

The Burachapori Wildlife Sanctuary is actually a part of the Laokhowa Wildlife Sanctuary. In fact though these two wildlife sanctuaries in Assam have two different names, they are eologically and geographically a singular entity. 60% of the sanctuary is grassland.

Burachapori Wildlife Sanctuary is located on the southern bank of river Brahmaputra in the Sonitpur district, Assam with the area of 44.06 sq. kms.

Flora and Fauna

The Bura-Chapori sanctuary is well-known for the Bengal Florican and One-horned Rhinoceros that was once on the verge of extinction. The mighty Brahmaputra River flowing behind the sanctuary provides a scenic backdrop to it. So tourists are able to see the richness of the flora and fauna along with taking a glimpse of one of the most important rivers of country.

Mammals: Tiger, Leopard, Wild Buffalo, Hog Deer, Wild Pigs etc. and occasional visit of herd of Elephants.

Birds: Bengal Florican, Swamp partridge (fancolin), Wood Cock, Water Hen, Parakeets, Ferruginous Duck etc.

The richness of wild life in the Bura-Chapori Wildlife Sanctuary is really noticeable. You will find the great Indian one-horned Rhinoceros, Bengal Florican, Wild Boar, Otter, Civet Cat, Asiatic Buffalo, Leopard Cat, Barking Deer, etc. Various species of migratory birds like wintering ferruginous ducks and reptiles are found over here.  There are a lot of fishes and it would really be fun to watch them moving about in the water bodies. The migratory birds come to this place stretching over the alluvial flood plains of Central Assam.

The Bura Chapori wildlife sanctuary in Assam is located in the Sonitpur district of Assam. The distance of this Burachapori national park is situated at a distance of about 30 kilometres from the Salonibari Airport of Tezpur in Assam. You can board a bus or a taxi from Tezpur airport and reach Bura Chapori wildlife sanctuary within half an hour. This wildlife park is 160 kilometres from Guwahati and 180 kilometres from Jorhat. You can also get a taxi or bus to the Barachapori wildlife sanctuary from Nagaon which is just 40 kilometres away from this place.
