Sibsagar Shivdol - Assam

The Sivadol is a group of structures comprising three Hindu temples of Sivadol stands on the bank of Borpukhuri tank in the heart of Sivasagar, Assam.

Location:

The Sibsagar (Sivasagar) Shivdol is situated at the heart of the Sivasagar. It is located at 26°59'18"N and 94°37'59"E, Sivasagar city which was known earlier as Sibsagar in the Sibsagar district of Upper Assam in Northeast India.

History:

It was built in 1734 by Bar Raja Ambika, queen of Ahom king Swargadeo Siba Singha. The Sivadol (dol means temple in Assamese) is believed to be the tallest Shiva temple in India. This temple is surrounded by two other temples Bishnudol & Devidol. Its height is 104 feet and the perimeter is 195 ft (59 m) at the base. It is capped by an eight feet high golden-dome called 'Kolosi', on the topmost part of the dole. The walls of the temple are sculptured with statues of numerous Hindu Gods and Goddesses.

Shiva Dole is pride of not only Sivasagar but also of whole Assam. This giant temple is located few feet higher than the normal town level. It is visible from most of the corners of the small town, that adds real charm to the whole town. Every year these temples attract many national and international tourists to the town.

Each year during the Shivaratri, a huge mela (fair) is organised in the temple ground and pilgrims from all over India arrives here to offer puja. The shivdol is managed by Dol Unnayan committee. During July-Aug (Sawan maah) month huge numbers of devotees comes across the country to this temple.
