In a significant milestone for agricultural recognition, theindigenous wheat varietyfrom the Bundelkhand region in Uttar Pradesh, locally known asKathiya Gehu, has been granted the prestigiousGeographical Indication (GI) tag. This is thefirst farm producefrom Uttar Pradesh to receive this honor.

GI Certification Process

The process for GI certification ofKathiya Gehuwas initiated by theKhatiya Wheat Bangra Producer Company Limited, a localFarmer Producer Organization (FPO), with support from entities likeNABARDin January 2022. After atwo-year journey, the GI tag, bearing certificate number585, was officially awarded onMarch 30, 2024.
