List of The Ramsar Sites in India

As of February 2025, India is currently recognized by Ramsar sites with 89, covering more than 13 lakh hectares, important for biodiversity conservation and sustainable use. It is Tamil Nadu that has the most Ramsar sites, or sites can be defined as internationally important wetlands.
The newly designated sites include Sakkarakottai Bird Sanctuary and Therthangal Bird Sanctuary in Tamil Nadu, Khecheopalri Wetland in Sikkim, and Udhwa Lake in Jharkhand. These sites are recognized under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands providing necessary habitats for several diverse flora and fauna and providing essential ecosystem services to local communities.
These recognized Ramsar sites include wetlands with large populations of migratory birds, to lakes with several metres of submerged aquatic plant life. Each of these Ramsar Sites tell their unique conservation and protection narrative. India’s actions on wetlands highlight its commitment to the environments sustainability.
