
Operation Kaveri is a rescue operation done by the Indian government through which Indian citizens stuck in the conflict in Sudan in 2023 were taken back to their home country. In total, 4,097 people were brought back home: 3,961 Indian citizens and 136 foreign nationals were brought back home by aircraft and ships.

• Purpose:
To evacuate Indian nationals who were fleeing deadly fighting in Sudan between the national country army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
• Launch Date:
April 24, 2023.
Modes of Transport:
• Indian Air Force (IAF) sorties (18 sorties.
• Indian Navy (5 trips).
• Commercial flights (20).
• Indian Navy ship INS Sumedha, a stealth offshore patrol vessel also deployed.
• 2 IAF C-130J special operations aircraft were on standby in Jeddah.
Evacuation Actions:
• Transfer of stranded Indians from Sudan to Sudan’ capital city Khartoum.
• Fly stranded Indians back to India from Khartoum.
• Establish a transit facility in Jeddah.
Outcomes:
Operations brought back 4,097 people which included 3,961 Indian nationals and 136 foreign nationals.
Why “Kaveri ?
Because “Kaveri” is a river in India, the river of Kaveri. The reason it symbolizes a mother taking care to take her children to safety, was used in correlation to the extraction terms used to evacuate refugees from Ukraine known as “Operation Ganga”.
