To tackle Shillong’s chronic traffic congestion, the East Khasi Hills district administration has implemented the Smart Zonal Parking System, effective from August 1. Launched under the Meghalaya Parking Policy for Urban Areas 2025, the initiative empowers uniformed Dorbar Shnong volunteers to manage and oversee parking operations across the city. This marks the end of free and unregulated roadside parking in Shillong.
The system mandates online payments for all parking fees and fines, eliminating cash transactions and manual receipts. Uniformed volunteers from the Dorbar Shnong have been empowered to supervise parking operations citywide, ensuring better enforcement and local participation. This digital-first initiative is expected to streamline urban mobility, enforce parking discipline, and improve traffic flow across Shillong.
