India Launches First Multi-Lane Free Flow Tolling

India is making significant strides in upgrading its road infrastructure with the launch of its very first Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling system. This cutting-edge system does away with toll barriers, allowing for smooth and uninterrupted travel. The initial rollout will take place at the Choryasi Fee Plaza on NH-48 in Gujarat. This initiative stems from a partnership between the Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL), which is backed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), and ICICI Bank. The contract was officially signed at the NHAI headquarters in New Delhi on August 30, 2025, with NHAI Chairman Shri Santosh Kumar Yadav and other senior officials in attendance.

Key Features of Multi-Lane Free Flow Tolling

What is MLFF?

Multi-Lane Free Flow Tolling is a high-tech, barrier-less toll system that uses FASTag and Vehicle Registration Number (VRN) to collect tolls electronically. It employs High-Performance RFID Readers and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) Cameras to automatically detect and charge vehicles without requiring them to stop.

This system is designed to,

  • Eliminate toll booths and stop-and-go traffic
  • Reduce congestion and travel time
  • Enhance fuel efficiency
  • Lower vehicle emissions
  • Improve toll revenue accuracy and transparency

Where Will It Be Implemented?

The pilot MLFF system will begin at Choryasi Fee Plaza in Gujarat, making it the first toll plaza in India to be completely barrier-free. Additionally, another site—Gharaunda Fee Plaza on NH-44 in Haryana—will also adopt the MLFF system as part of early implementation.

NHAI plans to expand MLFF to around 25 National Highway fee plazas during the 2025–26 financial year, and the process of identifying additional sites is already underway.
