Semicon India 2025: PM Modi receives first made-in-India chip ‘Vikram’

India’s semiconductor sector just took a significant step forward with the launch of Semicon India 2025, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 2nd at Yashobhoomi in New Delhi. This three-day event, running from September 2nd to 4th, is expected to draw over 20,750 participants, including 2,500 delegates from 48 different countries, all coming together to discuss India’s expanding role in the global semiconductor design and manufacturing landscape.

Overview

Semicon India 2025 is designed to spark a strong and sustainable semiconductor ecosystem. Key discussions will revolve around semiconductor fabrication plants (fabs), advanced packaging, smart manufacturing, artificial intelligence, research and development, and investment opportunities. The conference will also highlight the importance of state-level policy implementation and international collaboration to bolster India’s semiconductor industry.

Prime Minister’s Role and Vision

Prime Minister Modi kicked off the event and is scheduled to join the CEOs roundtable on September 3rd. His vision is to establish India as a global hub for semiconductor design, manufacturing, and technology development. This conference represents the ‘Perform’ phase of the national initiative, following the earlier ‘Reform’ and ‘Transform’ phases. This phase focuses on putting into action and scaling semiconductor projects throughout the country.

Key Projects and Infrastructure Development

Four new semiconductor facilities were sanctioned recently, focusing on packaging, silicon carbide, discrete semiconductors, and 3D glass technology. The Micron facility, approved in 2023, is nearing completion. Major fab projects are underway in Gujarat (Dholera and Sanand) and Assam (Jagi Road). These developments are supported by workforce training and logistics infrastructure to ensure smooth operations.

Policy and Incentives

The Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme is designed to expand the MSME base by creating upstream and downstream value chains. The Design Linked Incentive (DLI) scheme promotes innovation and design capabilities. The government aims to encourage private sector participation and support homegrown semiconductor companies through incentives and collaborations, focusing on product development and intellectual property rights.

International Participation

Semicon India 2025 hosted six country roundtable discussions and featured country pavilions. Over 50 global technology leaders shared insights, reinforcing India’s position on the global semiconductor map. The event also included dedicated spaces for startups and workforce development, denoting the importance of innovation and skill enhancement.

Growth of Semicon India Conferences

Since its launch in 2022, Semicon India has become a flagship platform for semiconductor advancement. Previous editions were held in Bengaluru (2022), Gandhinagar (2023), and Greater Noida (2024). The conferences aim to showcase technological progress and policy frameworks to boost the semiconductor industry in India and worldwide.
