The third edition of Unmesha – International Literature Festival took place in Patna, Bihar, from September 25th to 28th, 2025. This vibrant event gathered writers, poets, scholars, and publishers from 15 different countries, showcasing over 100 languages. The Vice-President of India, Shri C.P. Radhakrishnan, attended the valedictory session as the Chief Guest, marking his first visit to Bihar since taking office. The festival highlighted the vital role of literature in shaping society and fostering cultural unity.
Bihar’s Spiritual and Historical Significance
Bihar is celebrated as a land rich in dharma, culture, and knowledge. It stands out as a spiritual hub where Buddhist, Jain, and Hindu traditions beautifully intersect. Bodh Gaya, the site where Siddhartha Gautama achieved enlightenment, has become a global emblem of peace and mindfulness. Vaishali, the birthplace of Lord Mahavira, embodies the Jain principles of non-violence and truth. Ancient universities like Nalanda and Vikramshila drew scholars from all over Asia, establishing Bihar as a beacon of intellectual prowess in ancient times.
Political and Social Contributions
Bihar’s historical narrative includes powerful empires like Magadha and Maurya. It was also the birthplace of democracy in Vaishali over 2,500 years ago. The state played a crucial role in India’s freedom struggle, notably through the Champaran Satyagraha led by Mahatma Gandhi. Bihar has been home to influential leaders such as Dr. Rajendra Prasad, India’s first President, and Lok Nayak Jayaprakash Narayan, a pivotal figure in India’s democratic evolution and social reforms.
Cultural Heritage and Festivals
The cultural wealth of Bihar is expressed in its traditional arts and festivals. Mithila painting, for example, is a famous form of folk art. Similarly, folk theatre such as Bidesia reflects the region’s social life. Chhath Puja is one of the most soundly disciplined and economically conscious festivals in the Hindu community, celebrated in honour of the Sun god. It is significant because devotees worship both the rising and settng sun, bearing witness to its spiritual and environmental integrity.
Unmesha Festival and Literary Diversity
Unmesha symbolizes the rich tapestry of literary diversity, bringing together voices from various backgrounds and cultures to celebrate the power of words. Organised by Sahitya Akademi with support from the Ministry of Culture and the Bihar government, Unmesha encourages dialogue among writers, translators, and scholars, encouraging a shared understanding and cultural unity under the idea of Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat.
