In a landmark moment for India’s social development narrative, Kerala is set to become the first state to be officially declared “free of extreme poverty.” The announcement will be made by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on November 1, 2025, during a public event at Central Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram. This declaration highlights the state’s sustained focus on inclusive growth and targeted welfare programmes, and sets a precedent for other states to follow.
The extreme poverty eradication programme was launched in 2021, shortly after the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government assumed office for its second term. According to Minister for Local Self-Governments M.B. Rajesh, the initiative was one of the first Cabinet decisions post-2021 elections.
The programme aimed to,
- Identify and uplift families living in severe economic distress
- Integrate state and local resources for housing, food, health, and income support
- Enable long-term rehabilitation through employment, education, and asset creation
Through this multi-sectoral approach, the government ensured that families at the very bottom of the economic ladder received not just aid, but also a pathway out of chronic poverty.
