An emergency alternative landing facility is being developed on the Dibrugarh–Moran stretch of the National Highway, strengthening both civil aviation safety and strategic preparedness in Upper Assam. Scheduled for inauguration in February, the facility will serve as an emergency landing option for Dibrugarh airport, especially during adverse weather, technical failures, or security contingencies.
Key points:
- Northeast India’s first Emergency Landing Facility (ELF) is being built on a national highway in Assam.
- The landing strip is located on the Dibrugarh–Tinsukia section of NH-16 (Moran Bypass area).
- Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the facility will be ready for operation in February.
- The project is being developed in coordination with the Indian Air Force (IAF).
- It will allow fighter jets and military aircraft to land and take off during emergencies.
- The strip is about 3.5 km long, designed specially for aircraft operations.
- During emergencies or military exercises, the highway section can be temporarily closed for aircraft landing.
- The project will strengthen India’s defence preparedness in the Northeast, a strategically sensitive region near international borders.
