A bird survey carried out during Magh Bihu 2026 at Chandubi Beel and nearby habitats documented 111 bird species, spanning wetland-dependent birds, grassland and woodland species, as well as birds of prey.
The exercise was undertaken by the Loharghat Range of the Kamrup West Forest Division, reinforcing Chandubi Beel’s role as a key biodiversity-rich wetland in Assam.
Key findings of the census
- A total of 111 bird species were recorded.
- The species included: Aquatic birds (wetland-dependent species), Grassland birds, Woodland birds and Raptors (birds of prey)
- The diversity indicates that Chandubi Beel functions as a multi-habitat ecosystem, supporting varied feeding and nesting requirements.
- The exercise aimed to assess the current status of bird species in the region and to compare present findings with historical data available in the forest division’s working plan.
