Former hockey international Saranjeet Singh passes away

Former hockey international Saranjeet Singh passed away. He was 59 and is survived by wife, daughter, and a son.

The former State Bank of India hockey player who played for Coronation Club in the local league represented Hyderabad juniors and seniors in the late 70s and 80s and also played for the Indian team that toured Germany in 1983.

Alok Mishra becomes new MD of India Ports Global Limited

The government has picked Captain Alok Mishra as the managing director of India Ports Global Ltd. He is currently serving as the Head of operation and transformation lead at the Gateway Terminals India Pvt Ltd (GTI), Mumbai Maharashtra.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has cleared the candidature of Mishra for the full-time role, a year after the previous incumbent demitted office on September 18 last year.

Alok Mishra has been appointed for the full-time role for a term of 5 years. Alok Mishra succeeds Harjeet Kaur Joshi, CMD of Delivery Company of India Ltd (SCI), who held the additional charge as the MD of IPGL.

MP Govt announced Implementation of “Mukhyamantri Ration Aapke Dwar Yojana”

Madhya Pradesh government has announced the implementation of Mukhyamantri Ration Aapke Dwar Yojana, which will start from November 2021. Under the scheme, the ration will now be transported by vehicles in those villages where there are no fair price shops.

To provide ration material to the vulnerable sections such as Divyanga (Specially-Abled) and senior citizens near their homes. To ensure proper ration supply for poor tribal families in each village bin 74 tribal dominated blocks of 16 districts.

Sri Lanka’s first Test captain Bandula Warnapura passes away

Sri Lanka’s first-ever Test cricket captain Bandula Warnapura died at the age of 68. The 68-year old former cricketer had been admitted to ICU after he was diagnosed with high sugar levels, hindering blood circulation.

A right-handed batsman, he led his country when it faced England in it’s first-ever Test match in 1982 and played three more Tests, scoring 96 runs overall at an average of 12. He also played 12 ODI matches, scoring 180 runs at an average of 15.

Australia’s James Pattinson retires from international cricket

Australia fast bowler James Pattinson has retired from international cricket after deciding he is not ready to push for Ashes selection. The 31-year-old, who has played 21 Tests and 15 ODIs, though will continue to play domestic cricket.

“Leading into pre-season I really wanted to give the Ashes a crack,” Pattinson said.

Pattinson claimed 81 Test wickets and 16 ODI scalps in his career after making his Test debut in December 2011 alongside Mitchell Starc and David Warner against New Zealand in Brisbane. His last Test was against New Zealand in Sydney in January 2020 while he last played an ODI way back in September 2015 against England at Leeds.

Rajnath Singh launches book on ‘Veer’ Savarkar

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh launched the book titled “Veer Savarkar: The Man Who Could Have Prevented Partition” authored by Uday Mahurkar and Chirayu Pandit at Ambedkar International Centre, New Delhi. The book is based on the life of Hindu Mahasabha leader Vinayak Damodar Savarkar and presents many new facets of Savarkar’s life which are unknown to the country. It has been authored by Uday Mahurkar and Chirayu Pandit.

International Snow Leopard Day : 23 October

Every year, October 23 is observed as International Snow Leopard Day since 2014. The main purpose of this day is to show the importance of snow leopard conservation and raise awareness about this incredible animal. The day also emphasizes the importance of taking measures to stop poaching, as well as consolidating efforts in terms of an environmental organization in the countries of the snow leopard range.

It was on October 23, 2013, when political leaders from 12 countries came together to endorse the ‘Bishkek Declaration’ on the conservation of snow leopards.

Snow Leopard is found in 12 countries. They are India, Nepal, Bhutan, China, Mongolia, Russia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.

South Korea launches its first homegrown space rocket

South Korea launched its first domestically-developed space rocket, television pictures showed, as it seeks to join the ranks of advanced space-faring nations.

The Korean Satellite Launch Vehicle II (known as Nuri) took off from Goheung, about 500km south of Seoul. South Korea is locked in an arms race with North Korea, with both recently test-firing new weapons.

Nuri cost South Korea an estimated 2 trillion won $1.6 billion to develop. Weighing 200 tonnes and measuring 47.2 meters long, it is fitted with six liquid-fuelled engines.

India Internet Governance Forum to be conducted in November 2021

India Internet Governance Forum to be conducted in November 2021 to bring all stakeholders of internet governance on a single platform.

The curtain raiser event is precursor to the India Internet Governance Forum (IIGF), which will be conducted jointly by the Ministry of Electronics and IT, NIXI, and Multistakeholder Group from 8th to 11th of November, The theme of IIGF 2021 is ‘Empower India through Power of Internet’.

The India Internet Government Forum is an initiative associated with the UN Internet Governance Forum (UN-IGF).

Scorsese & Szabo to be honored with Satyajit Ray Lifetime Achievement Award

Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Anurag Thakur has announced that film directors Istvan Szabo and Martin Scorsese will be conferred the Satyajit Ray Lifetime Achievement Award at the 52nd International Film Festival of India (IFFI), which will be held from November 20 to 28 in Goa.

Istvan Szabo is one of the most critically acclaimed Hungarian film directors of the past few decades known for masterpieces like Mephisto (1981) Father (1966).

Martin Scorsese is one of the major figures of the New Hollywood era, regarded as one of the greatest and most influential directors in film history.

Mole Day observed on 23 October

On 23rd October every year mole day is celebrated which is popular amongst all chemistry enthusiasts. This day is marked to commemorate and honour the Avogadro‘s number.

Celebrated by chemists annually from 6.02 am to 6.02 pm on October 23rd, Mole Day commemorates Avogadro’s number (6.022 x 1023), which is the number of atoms in exactly 12 grams of carbon-12 (one mole). This was founded by the National Mole Day Foundation on 15th May 1991. This occasion aims to make the students interested in chemistry and its concepts. The theme for the occasion, inspired by the mascot – A Mole. This year the theme is DispicaMole Me. 

Chhattisgarh launched the “Shri Dhanwantri Generic Medical Store” Scheme

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel launched a generic medical store scheme to provide medicines at affordable rates and said his government has been making consistent efforts to make healthcare services accessible to the poorest of the poor in the state. The scheme will be implemented by the Urban Administration and Development Department (UADD).

Under the scheme, around 188 medical shops are planned to be opened in 169 cities. Currently, 84 generic medical shops are opened in the inaugural session to distribute medicine. Under this scheme, people will get a discount between 09 percent and 71 percent on the MRP (Market Rate Price) of generic medicines.

Economist Gita Gopinath to leave IMF in January 2022

The International Monetary Fund’s Chief Economist and Director of the Research Department Gita Gopinath will leave the organization in January 2022, the global financial institution announced.

Gopinath will return to Harvard University’s economics department. She was on public service leave during her tenure at the organization, and the leave will end in January 2022. Gopinath, during her tenure, co-authored the “Pandemic Paper”, a document that set globally endorsed targets for vaccinating the world against Covid-19, the IMF said.

Harvard had extended Gopinath’s leave by one year as an exceptional case, which allowed her to serve as the chief economist at the IMF for three years. IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva said Gopinath’s contribution to the fund was “truly remarkable”.

A book titled “The Origin Story of India’s States” by VS Srinivasan

A new book, slated to release on October 25, will present the incredible origin stories of each of India’s 28 states and eight union territories. “The Origin Story of India’s States”, published by Penguin Random House India (PRHI), is written by author Venkataraghavan Subha Srinivasan.

Also, their continuous changes. Venkataraghavan Subha Srinivasan is a writer, actor, and strategy consultant from Bengaluru, Karnataka. This is his first non-fiction book.
